Job Description
Work LocationIn-person/ New York, USA Expected duration3 to 6 months and the desired start date is 1 October 2026 Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrg. Setting and Reporting This advertisement is for an internship located in the Sales and Marketing Section, Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications in New York City. The Outreach Division engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations. The Sales and Marketing Section works to promote United Nations' knowledge, communication, and outreach objectives by publishing, selling, distributing, and licensing, print and electronic publications, periodicals and databases that disseminate UN knowledge, studies, and data. The internship is unpaid, full-time and will last up to 6 months. Interns work up to five days per week (35 hours). The intern will report directly to and work under the supervision and support of the Marketing Officer. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate. Under the supervision of the Sales and Marketing Officer, the intern will undertake projects focused on analyzing and enhancing the marketing reach and audience engagement of United Nations Publications. The projects will provide the intern with practical exposure to publishing, marketing, communications, and audience analytics within an international organization. Within the framework of these projects, the intern may:
- Conduct research and analysis of current marketing practices, audience engagement trends, and promotional approaches used for United Nations Publications, and prepare recommendations for enhancing outreach.
- Contribute to the development of a sample integrated marketing campaign for a selected publication, thematic collection, or target audience segment, including proposed messaging, communication channels, and performance indicators.
- Support the preparation of promotional materials and draft sample content for web, social media, and other communication platforms, gaining experience in digital content creation and editorial processes.
- Assist in designing and analyzing surveys or feedback mechanisms to assess audience awareness, interests, and engagement with United Nations Publications, and summarize findings in a project report.
- Compile and analyze data from existing sales, marketing, or audience engagement sources to identify trends and produce presentations or reports highlighting key insights.
- Participate in the planning process for a public outreach initiatives or events by researching best practices, preparing background materials, and documenting lessons learned.
- Prepare a final project presentation summarizing research findings, recommendations, and proposed strategies to strengthen the visibility and accessibility of United Nations Publications. Qualifications/special skillsPlease note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
- (c) have graduated with a university degree (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
Applicants must also:
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

The United Nations must ensure all applicants for an internship, regardless of citizenship or national origin, are authorized to work in the country where the internship will be undertaken, either remotely, hybrid, or on the UN-premise duty station. Before resuming an internship, the applicant must submit proof of visa and/or work authorization. Applicants who have previously served six months, in total, as an intern in one or more UN Entities in the UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern. Applicants who are children, siblings, and sons or daughters-in-law (including stepchildren, half-siblings, or stepsiblings) of an active staff member in a UN Secretariat cannot be engaged as an intern.
