Public Information Intern UNDGC - United Nations Department of Global Communications New York City Both national and international Internship level Speaks English, French Application deadline: September 27, 2026 (14 days) Apply Summary by Impactpool The Public Information Intern will work in the Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section of the Department of Global Communications in New York. This unpaid internship lasts 4-6 months, starting in October 2026, and focuses on enhancing educational and digital outreach resources related to human rights. Duties and Responsibilities The Internship is in the Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section, which is part of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. The Department of Global Communications is responsible for informing the public, civil society and Member States with trusted information and communicating the UN story around the world through its global networks and United Nations Information Centres and Services. The Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section advances awareness and understanding of human rights-related issues through education, public engagement and advocacy, with a focus on promoting equality, combating discrimination and fostering respect for the dignity and rights of all people. As part of its mandate, the Section supports a range of United Nations outreach initiatives, including the Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery. Through partnerships with civil society, governments, educators and the private sector, the Section develops educational and communications materials, including events, exhibits, and digital materials, for use at United Nations Headquarters and in the field. The internship is for a minimum period of four months with an opportunity for extension up to six months and the expected start date is October 2026. This internship is UNPAID, in-person, and full-time (35 hours per week), and is based on the United Nations premises in New York, USA. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. Working under the supervision of a Public Information Officer, the intern will contribute to a project focused on enhancing educational, communications and digital outreach resources related to the work of the Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, in the Human Rights and Outreach Programmes Section. As part of this project, the intern will:- Conduct research on thematic issues related to human rights, equality, anti-discrimination and United Nations outreach initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of educational, communications and digital outreach products by drafting and editing website content, news stories, social media content and multimedia materials.
- Research lectures, exhibitions, speakers, educational initiatives and outreach activities relevant to the project and synthesize findings for inclusion in project materials and resources.
- Support the creation of audiovisual project deliverables through research, transcribing, and preparation of content for digital and social media platforms. Proficiency in video production and editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar tools), including captioning and basic motion graphics, is desirable.
- Contribute to the development of decks and other presentations, designed for internal information.
- Participate in project-related planning and coordination activities and contribute research, content and recommendations that support project events, lectures and outreach initiatives.
