Job Description
The Coatings & Product Development Specialist advances HPF's product quality, coating technologies, and long-term innovation strategy while supporting both manufacturing and sales teams. Grounded in Hancock Lumber's people-first and safety-first culture, this role leads R&D efforts, improves coating systems, contributes to future production line design, and educates internal teams and customers. The Specialist also drives growth through value-added product development—including exterior siding, durable trim boards, and specialty small-batch coatings—while strengthening supplier relationships in a manner consistent with Hancock Lumber's commitment to respect, integrity, and continuous improvement. Starting salary is approximately $90,000, with final compensation based on experience and qualifications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Product & Process Development Lead R&D for new coatings, colors, technologies, and application methods. Evaluate and select coating systems that optimize performance on Eastern White Pine. Develop and test exterior siding and trim board products with enhanced durability. Design and support the layout of future staining lines and small-batch specialty lines. Analyze competitor products and technologies to ensure HPF remains an industry leader. Select coating products and technologies for R&D pipelines. Recommend and influence coating supplier choices. Determine which new products, technologies, and innovations to pursue. Consistently promote safe processes and equipment use in all development work. Supplier & Equipment Management Act as the primary contact for coating and equipment manufacturers, building partnerships grounded in Hancock Lumber's respectful and collaborative culture. Troubleshoot coating, manufacturing, and equipment failures with a safety-first mindset. Identify, evaluate, and recommend coating suppliers and new product opportunities. Quality Control & Production Support Ensure coating formulas, application processes, and equipment settings deliver top-tier quality while supporting HPF's commitment to consistent, reliable production. Resolve coating failures, product issues, supply challenges, and lead-time concerns. Maintain confidence in production consistency and on-time order fulfillment. Support a culture of continuous improvement by identifying safer and more efficient methods. Training, Sales Support & Customer Education Deliver product education to lumberyard teams, contractors, and clients in a clear, respectful, and approachable manner. Support Account Manager in securing jobs by advising on appropriate coating systems. Strengthen sales efforts through technical expertise and improved supplier relations.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Self-starter with a safety-first mindset and commitment to Hancock Lumber's culture and values. Strong communicator able to educate teammates, support customers, and work respectfully with suppliers. Effective working across production, R&D, education, and sales functions. Solid understanding of HPF coating systems, coating chemistry, and UV technology. Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting, equipment optimization, and process design. Ability to interpret technical data and solve mechanical/scientific problems. Capable of designing, testing, and refining manufacturing processes. Committed to continuous learning and improvement.DESIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Strong understanding of coatings, application methods, and related technologies. Experience designing coating lines or specialty small-batch coating systems. Familiarity with Eastern White Pine and general lumber industry practices. Previous experience with exterior siding or trim board products. Technical certifications in coatings, manufacturing, or related fields are a plus.REPETITIVE PHYSICAL DEMANDS
