BASIC FUNCTION
Under administrative direction, the Office Assistant organizes, coordinates, and performs a wide variety of office functions to support building-level operations. This role supports and coordinates communication between administrators, staff, families, students, and the general public. This role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to handle confidential matters. This position may provide limited clerical support to the school nurse, such as assisting with documentation and routine tasks; it does not involve providing medical care or making health-related decisions.
REPORTS TO
Building Principal
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Provide administrative assistance to office staff and school nurse as needed. Communicate with a variety of site and District personnel and administrators to coordinate school operations and maintenance, resolve conflicts and issues, and exchange information as appropriate. Support daily attendance records of the building. Coordinate and assist with special events for the school; assure adherence to legal requirements and Board policies. Assist with ordering and distribution of supplies. Answer phones and greet visitors; take and relay messages; provide information to students, parents, faculty, and site personnel; interpret, apply and explain District policies and school procedures and regulations. Willingness to obtain Medication Administration in Iowa Schools training. Distribute medications in the event the nurse is absent (i.e. daily medication) . Kindergarten Round Up support. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF
School office terminology, practices and procedures. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Health and safety regulations. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. District organization, operations, policies and objectives. Oral and written communication skills. Standard office etiquette. Letter and report writing skills.
ABILITY TO
Perform a wide variety of clerical duties to coordinate school office activities and assist office staff and school nurse in a variety of administrative matters. Maintain accurate financial and statistical records. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Compose correspondence independently; strong word processing skills. Work independently with little direction. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Display high standards of ethical conduct, honesty, and integrity. Collaborative team member with a growth mindset. Set and meet timelines.
Salary:
Minimum $17/hour. The Van Meter Community School District offers a comprehensive benefits package, including IPERS and single health insurance.
Terms of Employment:
174 days (approx) aligned with the student calendar, 7:30am-4pm Monday-Friday
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent. Previous office experience is preferred. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Customer focused mindset with a strong sense of professionalism. Successful completion of criminal background investigation.
