Job Description

Mission Overview The Community Youth Choir Leader / Director of Youth Ministries at First United Methodist Church of Montrose nurtures a welcoming, spiritually enriching environment for children, youth and families. This role begins with establishing a vibrant community children and youth choir and will grow into a broader ministry position as participation expands. The ideal candidate is a compassionate mentor with a heart for service, skilled in building intergenerational connections and leading with creativity, musicality and administrative excellence. Key Responsibilities Children & Youth Programming (
Initial Focus:
Choir Launch & Leadership) Establish and direct a community children/youth choir, including recruitment, rehearsals and periodic worship or community performances. Build relationships with families, schools and community partners to recruit children and youth into the choir. Plan and lead Sunday School and youth gatherings, ensuring age‑appropriate faith formation. Integrate children and youth into worship through occasional participation, special Sundays and seasonal events. Community Engagement Develop partnerships with local schools, music educators and family‑serving organizations to increase visibility and participation in church programs. Collaborate with the Director of Communications to share clear, timely information with families through digital and print channels. Volunteer Coordination & Safety Recruit, train and support volunteers for children's and youth ministries. Ensure compliance with Safe Sanctuary policies and required safety training. Program Administration Manage a modest ministry budget and coordinate materials for weekly and seasonal programming. Maintain communication with the pastor and Church Council regarding program needs and progress. Growth Path (Future Expansion of Hours & Responsibilities) As the choir becomes established and participation grows, this position will expand in scope and weekly hours.
Additional responsibilities may include:
Developing a comprehensive children and youth ministry program beyond the choir. Creating new outreach initiatives, family events and intergenerational activities. Leading or coordinating mission projects, seasonal programs and community partnerships. Supporting long‑term strategic planning for youth and family ministries. This growth path will be shaped collaboratively with the pastor and Church Council based on congregational needs and program momentum. Qualifications Experience in children's ministry, education, music leadership or related fields Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with both children and adults Understanding of Christian mission and Wesleyan values Must pass a background check and be available Sunday mornings and occasional evenings
Bonus:
Experience with choir direction, event planning or community outreach.
