Music Director Redford Civic Symphony Orchestra Redford, MI Job Details Part-time | Contract $3,200 - $3,800 a year 1 day ago Qualifications Community engagement Public speaking Master's degree Leadership Full Job Description Music Director Search With a history dating back to the 1950s, the Redford Civic Symphony Orchestra (RCSO) is part of a rich and developing arts scene located in Southeast Michigan. The RCSO is the oldest inner ring suburban symphony orchestra in the metro Detroit area. We pride ourselves in providing concerts for the public for free. The orchestra is composed of a diverse group of musicians who are of varying ages and skills. Rehearsals are every Thursday evening, 7 - 9 pm at the Redford Township Community Center. Duration is the concert season, September through June. Concerts are held in October, December, March and May at churches in the community. Concert time is 3 pm on Sunday. The June concert is on the third Tuesday in June, at 7 pm, at the Redford Township Rec Center Amphitheater. Position Description The Redford Civic Symphony is seeking a Music Director to serve the organization beginning with the 2026 concert season. The Music Director reports to the RCSO Board of Directors and is responsible for carrying out the artistic mission of the organization. The Music Director oversees the selection of repertoire and guest artists, plans and leads constructive orchestra rehearsals. The Music Director is also responsible for the selection of new musicians with the assistance of a Personnel Manager. The Music Director works with the Board of Directors to schedule rehearsals and concerts in available venues. As the orchestra's artistic leader, the Music Director must build and sustain the orchestra's visibility and involvement in Redford and the surrounding communities. The Music Director is expected to work closely with the Board in carrying out these responsibilities. Compensation is provided that is commensurate with community orchestras.
The ideal candidate possesses:
  • Exceptional musicianship and conducting skills, and experience working with volunteer community musicians
  • Knowledge of a broad range of repertoire with the ability to create successful programs and select compelling guest artists
  • Ability to lead musicians of the orchestra with clarity and inspire excellence
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills with a willingness to collaborate
  • Skill and comfort in public speaking
  • The ability to partner creatively with the orchestra's board
  • Vision, passion and the ability to develop and lead performances that are meaningful and enjoyable for new and existing audiences
  • Willingness to engage enthusiastically with the community in meaningful educational programming
  • Previous or current music directorship or comparable experience
  • Masters or doctorate preferred
