Part-Time Organist First United Methodist Church of Frankfort is seeking a skilled and experienced Part-Time Organist/Pianist to provide musical leadership for our Sunday traditional worship service, choir rehearsals, and special worship services throughout the year.

$17,000-$20,000 annually, commensurate with training and experience About the Position The Organist/Pianist serves an important role in the worship life of First United Methodist Church of Frankfort by providing excellent musical leadership for our traditional worship service and supporting our choirs, pastors, musicians, and congregation. The ideal candidate will have strong piano and pipe organ skills, excellent sight-reading abilities, knowledge of music theory, and the ability to improvise and adapt musically in a worship setting. Experience with traditional Christian worship and hymnody is preferred. Responsibilities Prepare and provide music for the weekly Sunday traditional worship service at 11:00 a.m., including prelude, offertory, postlude, congregational hymns, choir anthems, and music during communion distribution. Select appropriate music and prepare, practice, and review music for worship services. Hymns are typically selected by the preaching pastor in consultation with the Director of Music and Worship. Determine appropriate organ registrations and console settings and practice them for effective worship leadership. Accompany the handbell choir, instrumental or vocal soloists, small ensembles, children's music groups, and other instrumental or vocal groups as needed. Inform the Office Administrator of worship service music selections by Monday at noon each week. Participate in weekly worship planning and collaborate with the Director of Music and Worship and pastors. Accompany regular choir rehearsals, including Wednesday evening and Sunday morning rehearsals. Music will be provided in advance; however, strong sight-reading, music theory, and improvisational skills are expected. Provide music for occasional additional worship services and special events throughout the year, including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, weddings, funerals, and other services as scheduled. Arrange for appropriate coverage during absences and communicate substitute needs and worship music information with other staff members. Have the right of first refusal to provide keyboard music for weddings and funerals held at the church. Other organists or pianists may be engaged in consultation with the staff Organist/Pianist. Monitor and report ongoing maintenance needs for the church pipe organ, two baby grand pianos, and other musical instruments to the Director of Music and Worship. Document smaller organ issues, including problems with specific stops or pipes, in the organ maintenance log located near the organ. This log will be shared with organ tuners and technicians before service calls. Report larger or emergency instrument issues to the Director of Music and Worship and Senior Pastor. Coordinate and oversee maintenance of the pipe organ and other musical instruments by arranging for qualified and trained professionals to perform necessary work. Qualifications Strong keyboard skills with proficiency on both piano and pipe organ. Ability to sight-read music effectively. Strong knowledge of music theory. Ability to improvise and adapt musically in a worship setting. Experience accompanying congregational singing, choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists. Familiarity with traditional Christian worship music and hymnody preferred. Formal musical training and/or significant experience as a church organist or pianist preferred. Ability to work collaboratively with pastors, music staff, volunteers, and other musicians. Reliable, organized, and able to prepare music in advance of worship services and rehearsals. Schedule and Availability This is a part-time position averaging 10-15 hours per week . The regular weekly commitment includes Sunday morning worship and choir rehearsals, along with time for music preparation, practice, worship planning, and collaboration. The Organist/Pianist must be available to regularly provide music for the Sunday traditional worship service at 11:00 a.m. and be available for occasional additional worship services and special events throughout the year.
