What we are looking for:
The mission of the Recreation, Education, and Interpretation Program is to create lasting and diverse outdoor recreational, interpretive, and educational experiences that inspire visitors to enjoy, respect, and connect with Oregon's State Forests. Specifically, the Tillamook Forest Center is home to the Program's Education and Interpretation Unit, which welcomes all visitors to explore, learn about, and connect with Oregon's State Forest. The unit's Visitor Services Specialist is an integral part of the team and the face for many as they begin their visit to the Tillamook Forest Center. As the Visitor Services Specialist you will use independent judgment, with support from the Visitor Services Coordinator (VSC), to communicate agency messaging, resolve issues, and explain rules to visitors with widely varying viewpoints on forest management and other natural resource topics. The position provides daily public contact, information, and assistance including in-person, by telephone, and in writing to resolve issues, answer questions, and ensure safety and well-being of the public. The position provides frontline informal interpretation and visitor contact, including meeting and greeting the public, responding to issues, concerns, and detailed questions about the facility & its programs, wayfinding, and the history and management of the Tillamook State Forest as well as interpreting recreation rules and policies in the forest. The position assists with gift shop operations including purchasing, merchandising, and assisting the VSC with decision making related to the operation of the gift shop including resolving issues and discrepancies with vendors. The Visitor Services Specialist also handles accounts payable, donation processing, and provides administrative support in conjunction with the VSC. Here is what you need to
Qualify:
Two years of experience in customer service. One year of which must have included explanation of rules, regulations, and policies and responsibility for dealing with unique or unusual situations. Requires criminal history background check

  • This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business.
If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver's license, a record check will be conducted on top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.
Desired Skills:
Skill in communicating with people from diverse viewpoints to resolve issues and explain rules. Experience effectively interpreting and communicating complex rules and policies to customers or clients. Merchandising and retail experience (including product ordering and pricing) Experience handling multiple assignments and frequent interruptions. Must have experience in a wide variety of Office suite software, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
