Located on the downtown waterfront, the museum welcomes more than 120,000 visitors annually through exhibitions, educational programs, community events, and an expanding calendar of public experiences. Position Summary The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg is seeking a creative, organized, and experienced Visual Merchandiser to support the presentation and ongoing development of the Museum Store. The Museum Store is an extension of the museum experience. We are looking for someone who sees merchandising as more than keeping shelves full — someone who can create visual relationships between objects, tell stories through merchandise, and help make the store feel distinctive, current, and unmistakably connected to the Museum of Fine Arts. Working closely with the Director of Museum Experience and store team, the Visual Merchandiser will be responsible for creating thoughtful, engaging merchandise displays that reflect the museum's exhibitions, collection, brand, and overall visitor experience. This is a hands-on position for someone with a strong visual eye and previous retail and merchandising experience. The ideal candidate understands how product placement, storytelling, color, scale, signage, and store flow work together to create a compelling retail environment —and ultimately drive sales. Responsibilities Maintain and refresh visual merchandising throughout the Museum Store three days per week. Create attractive, cohesive product displays across designated store zones, tables, shelving, walls, and fixtures. Merchandise a diverse assortment including books, jewelry, design objects, stationery, home goods, textiles, children's products, exhibition merchandise, and MFA-branded products. Develop displays that connect merchandise to current exhibitions, the museum collection, seasonal moments, and museum programs. Work with the Director of Museum Experience on product placement, merchandising priorities, new product introductions, and overall store presentation. Regularly refresh displays based on sales performance, inventory levels, new arrivals, and changing museum exhibitions. Receive and integrate new merchandise into existing displays. Maintain visual standards including product density, organization, signage, pricing, fixture presentation, and overall cleanliness. Identify opportunities to improve store flow, product visibility, cross-merchandising, and customer engagement. Help maintain back-stock organization so merchandise can be efficiently replenished. Assist with major store resets and exhibition merchandise transitions. Communicate product needs, display opportunities, and inventory concerns to Museum Store leadership. Support the retail team as needed while maintaining a primary focus on visual merchandising. Qualifications Previous visual merchandising and retail experience required . Strong understanding of retail presentation, product storytelling, and customer shopping behavior. Excellent visual sense with an understanding of color, composition, scale, balance, and space. Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned areas. Comfortable working with a broad range of merchandise and price points. Highly organized with strong attention to detail. Able to move merchandise, arrange fixtures, unpack shipments, and perform the physical work associated with maintaining retail displays. Experience in museum retail, specialty retail, design, fashion, home, books, or other visually driven retail environments is a plus. An interest in art, design, museums, and contemporary retail is strongly preferred. Schedule This is a part-time position working three days per week . The schedule will be established based on Museum Store needs and may occasionally include additional hours for major installations, exhibition openings, seasonal resets, or special events. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods, operate a computer and point-of-sale system, occasionally lift up to 25 pounds, and work indoors and outdoors during museum events.
