Job Description
PUBLIC WORKS JOB DESCRIPTION I. JOB TITLE PUBLIC WORKS CREW MEMBER
(NON-EXEMPT)II. POSITION SUMMARY
This position performs maintenance, repair, mechanical work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the Township's roads, storm drainage, parks, buildings, facilities, vehicles, and equipment. The position is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of Township-owned vehicles, trucks, machinery, and equipment, as well as assisting with general Public Works operations. The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a crew, operate light, medium, and heavy equipment, perform general Public Works duties, and conduct routine mechanical maintenance and repairs. Work is performed under the direction of the Road Foreman, Public Works Director, and Township Manager.III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position reports directly to the Road Foreman, Public Works Director and the Township Manager. Tasks performed may be performed with other crew members or may be performed alone. Those tasks include but are not limited to the following: Roads, Drainage, and Infrastructure- Pave, patch, and repair Township streets and roadways using asphalt, stone, dirt, concrete, and other appropriate materials.
- Install, repair, and replace street and road signs.
- Install, repair, and replace stormwater pipes, road culverts, and drainage systems.
- Perform general maintenance and repair of Township curbs, sidewalks, drainage structures, and other roadway infrastructure. Snow and Ice Operations
- Perform snow and ice removal from Township roadways, properties, and facilities using trucks, plows, loaders, and other equipment.
- Apply anti-skid materials and other approved materials as needed.
- Prepare, inspect, clean, and maintain snow removal equipment before, during, and after winter operations. Equipment Operation
- Operate light, medium, and heavy equipment, including mowers, sweepers, graders, backhoes, rollers, skid loaders, rubber-tired loaders, dump trucks, and other Township vehicles and equipment.
- Operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, manufacturer recommendations, and Township policies.
- Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections of Township-owned vehicles and equipment and report mechanical or safety concerns. Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and mechanical repairs on Township-owned vehicles, trucks, trailers, machinery, and equipment.
- Perform routine servicing, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks and replacement, belt and hose replacement, battery maintenance, tire changes and repairs, and other preventive maintenance.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and other equipment-related problems.
- Perform or assist with repairs to gasoline and diesel engines, brakes, steering and suspension systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and other vehicle and equipment components.
- Inspect vehicles and equipment for wear, damage, or unsafe operating conditions and report significant repair or replacement needs to the Road Foreman, Public Works Director, or Township Manager.
- Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and minor equipment modifications when qualified.
- Maintain and properly use shop equipment, mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, and other tools used for vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
- Maintain accurate vehicle, equipment, maintenance, repair, parts, and service records, including required daily trip sheets and inspection reports. Parks, Grounds, Buildings, and Facilities
- Perform interior and exterior maintenance of Township buildings and structures, including cleaning, painting, and minor repairs.
- Assist with grounds maintenance, including mowing, planting, seeding, weeding, tree trimming, landscaping, and general grounds care.
- Clean and maintain Township parks, park facilities, playgrounds, and restroom facilities.
- Remove trash along roadways and from Township facilities and properties. General Public Works and Emergency Duties
- Assist with loading, unloading, transporting, and securing materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintain Township vehicles, equipment, tools, garages, work areas, and storage facilities in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Assist with emergency response activities, including snow and ice events, storms, flooding, fallen trees, roadway hazards, and other emergency situations requiring Public Works assistance.
- Assist with Township projects and activities as directed by the Road Foreman, Public Works Director, or Township Manager.
- Attend required training and safety meetings.
- Perform all duties in accordance with Township policies, safety procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Works Director or Township Manager.
