Assistant Manager Job Summary We are looking for a dependable, energetic, and customer-focused Assistant Manager to help lead the daily operations of our busy coffee and bagel shop. The Assistant Manager will work closely with ownership and management to ensure excellent customer service, consistent food and beverage quality, proper food-safety practices, cleanliness, efficient staffing, and smooth day-to-day operations. We are looking for someone who is comfortable taking responsibility for a shift, leading by example, and stepping in wherever needed during busy periods. Key Responsibilities Assist with opening and closing the store. Lead and supervise employees during assigned shifts. Provide excellent, friendly, and professional customer service. Train and coach new and existing employees. Ensure employees follow store procedures and customer-service standards. Oversee preparation of coffee, beverages, bagels, sandwiches, and other menu items. Ensure food and beverages are prepared consistently and according to store standards. Monitor food quality, freshness, portioning, and presentation. Maintain proper food temperatures and food-safety procedures. Ensure compliance with sanitation, handwashing, allergen, cleaning, and food-storage requirements. Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, food-preparation area, front counter, dining area, equipment, and storage areas. Monitor inventory and communicate product and supply needs to management. Assist with receiving and properly storing deliveries. Help minimize food waste and control operating costs. Operate and oversee the POS/register and cash-handling procedures. Assist with refunds, voids, cash reconciliation, and end-of-shift procedures as authorized. Coordinate employee breaks and help arrange shift coverage when necessary. Monitor employee attendance, punctuality, and performance. Communicate employee or operational concerns to management. Assist with scheduling and other administrative responsibilities as needed. Address customer concerns professionally and escalate issues when appropriate. Ensure employees follow company policies and applicable health and safety requirements. Step into any position as needed to keep operations running smoothly during busy periods. Qualifications Previous experience in a coffee shop, café, bakery, restaurant, quick-service restaurant, or other food-service environment preferred. Previous supervisory, shift-lead, or management experience strongly preferred. Strong leadership and communication skills. Excellent customer-service skills. Dependable, punctual, organized, and responsible. Ability to train, coach, and motivate employees. Comfortable handling cash and operating a POS system. Ability to multitask and make decisions in a fast-paced environment. Basic understanding of food-safety and sanitation practices. Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the store during assigned shifts. Ability to stand for extended periods and perform normal food-service duties. Ability to lift and carry products, supplies, and equipment as reasonably required for the position. Flexible availability, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Food Safety Certification A current Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification recognized by the State of Connecticut is preferred. Certification may be obtained through ServSafe Food Protection Manager or another accredited CFPM certification program recognized under current Connecticut Department of Public Health requirements. The Assistant Manager is responsible for maintaining any required certification in good standing throughout employment. Compensation Competitive hourly pay based on experience, availability, management background, and food-safety certification.
