Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial Marine Supply Store Manager to lead a marine supply store located in New Bedford, MA. We are looking for someone who understands the commercial waterfront, has retail or supply-store management experience, and is excited about growing a business. This position goes beyond managing the day-to-day operations of a retail store. The Store Manager will be responsible for increasing outside sales, improving purchasing and margins, maintaining strong inventory controls, developing vendor relationships, and finding new ways to differentiate the business from other marine suppliers in the area. The ideal candidate understands the needs of commercial fishing vessels, captains, crews, marine contractors, and other waterfront businesses and combines that industry knowledge with strong business and financial judgment. Key Responsibilities Manage the day-to-day operations of the marine supply store, including employees, customer service, merchandising, receiving, inventory, and overall store organization. Grow outside sales by developing relationships with independent vessel owners, captains, crews, marine contractors, seafood companies, and other waterfront businesses. Actively identify and pursue new commercial accounts and sales opportunities throughout the New Bedford waterfront and surrounding marine industry. Develop strong relationships with existing customers while identifying additional products and services the business can provide. Manage purchasing and vendor relationships with a focus on obtaining better pricing, terms, product availability, and service. Identify opportunities to purchase directly from manufacturers, wholesalers, and alternative suppliers to reduce product costs and improve margins. Negotiate pricing and purchasing arrangements with vendors and continually evaluate whether products are being purchased as competitively as possible. Maintain appropriate inventory levels and ensure high-demand and critical marine products are available when customers need them. Monitor inventory turns, slow-moving inventory, obsolete inventory, shrinkage, stock-outs, and purchasing trends. Establish and maintain strong processes for receiving inventory, inventory adjustments, returns, damaged goods, and product pricing. Understand and actively manage the financial drivers of the store, including sales, product cost, markup, gross margin, gross profit, inventory levels, and inventory turns. Review sales and financial information by customer, product, and category to identify opportunities to improve profitability. Develop pricing strategies that balance competitiveness, customer relationships, and profitability. Think outside the box to identify products, services, delivery options, stocking programs, partnerships, and other opportunities that differentiate the store from competing marine supply businesses. Identify opportunities to cross-sell products and services and build broader relationships with commercial marine customers. Spend time interacting with customers and the local waterfront community to understand what products are difficult to source and where the business can provide better service. Develop and maintain a knowledgeable, accountable, and customer-focused store team. Qualifications Previous experience working in or around the commercial fishing, marine, waterfront, shipyard, boatyard, industrial supply, or related industry strongly preferred. Previous retail, store management, branch management, or supply-house management experience. Strong understanding of inventory management and purchasing. Experience managing vendors and negotiating pricing preferred. Ability to understand and manage key financial metrics, including gross margin, markup, inventory turns, and profitability. Strong sales and customer relationship skills. Comfortable developing new business and building relationships with customers outside of the store. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage employees and establish clear expectations and accountability. Working knowledge of inventory, POS, accounting, or similar business systems. Familiarity with the New Bedford commercial waterfront and fishing industry is highly desirable. What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who thinks like an owner. The right candidate will not be satisfied simply maintaining the existing business. We want someone who will continually ask: How can we bring in more outside customers? What products should we be carrying that we aren't carrying today? Where can we buy better? Where are we losing margin? What inventory isn't moving? What are customers currently buying somewhere else that we could provide? How can we become the preferred marine supply store on the waterfront? This is an opportunity for the right person to take ownership of an existing operation and play a significant role in its future growth. Measures of Success Success in this position will include measurable improvement in: Outside customer sales New commercial accounts Gross profit dollars Gross margin percentage Inventory turns Reduction of slow-moving and obsolete inventory Purchasing savings and improved vendor terms Customer retention and growth Overall store profitability
