Summary of Position The Shop Manager reports directly to the Equipment Manager and supervises the Rhode Island mechanics. This position is responsible for daily shop operations, maintenance and repairs, equipment readiness, and employee development. The Shop Manager works closely with operations, vendors, and administrative staff to prioritize work, manage costs, and keep equipment available. The role requires sound mechanical knowledge, proactive communication, and the ability to take ownership of issues through completion with minimal supervision. Responsibilities Lead and develop the mechanic team, assign daily work, and establish expectations for safety, productivity, quality, and accountability. Monitor mechanic productivity, review timekeeping, and address performance concerns in coordination with the Equipment Manager. Support hiring, onboarding, and training. Plan and oversee preventive maintenance, repairs, and required inspections. Work with field leadership to anticipate equipment needs and plan maintenance around production schedules to minimize downtime and maintain equipment readiness. Provide hands-on troubleshooting and repair support as needed. Verify repair quality and address recurring equipment problems. Manage vendor relationships and outside repairs, monitor progress, and communicate equipment status, delays, and expected completion dates. Review repair estimates, monitor maintenance costs, obtain required approvals, and recommend practical repair or replacement solutions. Ensure maintenance records, work orders, purchasing documentation, and invoices are accurate and completed promptly in company systems. Maintain a safe, organized shop and yard, including facility upkeep, tools, equipment, parts, and supplies. Follow company policies and applicable safety and inspection requirements. Provide regular updates to the Equipment Manager on shop priorities, equipment availability, staffing, and issues requiring support. Identify improvements and follow through on assigned actions. Support equipment transfers, rentals, disposals, and replacement planning as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Relevant experience in equipment maintenance, fleet operations, or shop supervision, with demonstrated mechanical knowledge and leadership ability. Demonstrated ability to lead mechanics, prioritize workloads, and manage maintenance activities with minimal supervision. Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical maintenance instructions. Proficiency with computers and maintenance systems, with strong organization and recordkeeping skills. Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with a commitment to safety and accountability. Desired Skills Class A or Class B CDL is a plus, but not required. Previous shop management or lead mechanic experience; ASE certification. Experience with specialized pipeline rehabilitation equipment, including boilers, jetters, CCTV systems, or robotics. Familiarity with Holman, JDE, or similar fleet maintenance and purchasing systems. Military or law enforcement experience with transferable leadership, technical, or operational skills.
