Full Job Description Job Purpose:
To oversee and manage all aspects of the produce department, ensuring high-quality products, excellent customer service, and profitable operations. This includes managing inventory, staff, merchandising, and maintaining sanitation standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the daily operations of the produce department, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and displaying products. Ensure the quality and freshness of all produce items by implementing proper storage and rotation procedures. Manage inventory levels effectively to minimize waste and maximize sales, conducting regular inventory checks and adjusting orders as needed. Develop and implement attractive and effective product displays to enhance customer appeal and drive sales, considering seasonality and promotional opportunities. Supervise and train produce department staff, providing guidance on product knowledge, customer service, and department procedures. This includes scheduling, performance management, and addressing any personnel issues. Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment in compliance with all company and health department regulations. Monitor sales data and market trends to identify opportunities for growth and improvement within the produce department. Control department expenses and labor costs to achieve profitability targets. Interact with vendors and suppliers to negotiate pricing, ensure timely deliveries, and resolve any quality or supply issues. Handle customer inquiries and complaints in a professional and courteous manner, striving to resolve issues effectively and maintain customer satisfaction. Stay current on industry best practices and new product trends to ensure the department remains competitive and appealing to customers. Collaborate with other department managers to ensure smooth store operations and a positive customer experience. Enforce company policies and procedures within the produce department. Participate in store meetings and training sessions as required.
Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Agriculture, or a related field preferred.
Required Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in produce department operations, preferably in a grocery retail environment. Proven track record of successfully managing inventory levels, reducing shrink, and maximizing sales and profitability within a produce department. Experience with ordering, receiving, storing, and displaying produce products. Experience in managing and training a team of produce associates. Experience in implementing and maintaining merchandising standards, including product rotation, quality control, and attractive displays. Experience in ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and sanitation procedures. Experience in analyzing sales data and market trends to make informed decisions regarding product selection and pricing. Experience in building and maintaining strong relationships with vendors and suppliers. Experience in handling customer inquiries and complaints effectively and efficiently. Experience with using point-of-sale (POS) systems and other relevant software.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, train, and supervise a team of produce associates. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills. Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to make sound judgments and decisions based on available information. Thorough knowledge of produce varieties, quality standards, and handling procedures. Knowledge of food safety regulations and sanitation practices. Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other relevant software. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. - Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods. - Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
