A Retail Store Manager manages a retail store, either an independent business or a store that is part of a large retail chain. Reviews and monitors merchandise sales, inventory and prices, and directs advertising and promotions. Supervises sales, warehouse, cleaning, maintenance and security staff and prepares work schedules. Responsible for resolving customer complaints.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Store Manager, the Grocery Manager oversees all aspects of the grocery department, including purchasing, merchandising, inventory control, labor management, and regulatory compliance. This role is responsible for driving sales and profitability while maintaining high product quality, exceptional customer service, and a safe, efficient work environment. The Grocery Manager leads and develops team members and directly supervises the Grocery Team Leader, Assistant Team Leaders, Department Specialists, and Grocery Stockers.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development Lead, coach, and develop team members to achieve department goals Foster a respectful, collaborative, and accountable team environment Communicate clearly and professionally with all staff Address and resolve team conflicts constructively Model co-op values, policies, and customer service standards Oversee hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions Maintain strong team morale, engagement, and accountability Financial & Operational Management Develop and execute department goals, budgets, and sales plans Monitor sales, margins, labor, and shrink; implement corrective actions Manage inventory, ordering, and receiving processes for the grocery department Create staff schedules within labor budgets while ensuring coverage Approve employee timecards and time-off requests Oversee daily operations, prioritizing and delegating tasks effectively Merchandising & Product Quality Ensure accurate pricing, product quality, and rotation standards Oversee displays, signage, and promotional execution Maintain full, well-rotated product displays Build relationships with vendors, suppliers, and community partners Stay informed on seasonal trends and product availability Uphold standards for organic and natural products Support customer education (e.g., newsletter content) Safety & Compliance Maintain a clean, organized, and safe department, including sales floor and storage areas Ensure compliance with food safety standards and health regulations Monitor proper equipment use and functionality Enforce safety procedures, including PPE and SDS guidelines Address hazards, equipment issues, and safety concerns promptly Additional Responsibilities Lead regular team meetings for communication and alignment Maintain daily department logs and communications Participate in storewide meetings and trainings Serve as a Person-in-Charge (PIC) as assigned (See PIC job description) Assist with stocking, merchandising, and customer service as needed Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent Valid WA Food Worker Card or ability to obtain within two weeks of hire
Experience:
3+ years of grocery operations experience required Previous supervisory experience required Experience with natural and organic foods preferred
