St. Vincent de Paul of Washington County (SVDPWC) is a nonprofit organization committed to serving neighbors in need through community-driven support, donations, and volunteerism. Our thrift stores generate critical resources that help fund outreach and provide direct assistance to individuals and families throughout Washington County. We are a mission-driven organization dedicated to compassion, dignity, responsible stewardship, and practical help.
Position Summary:
SVDPWC is seeking an experienced, hands-on Store Manager to lead the overall performance and daily operations of an assigned thrift store. This position is responsible for achieving sales and net-income goals, managing the approved store budget, developing a strong team, maintaining effective store operations, and ensuring excellent service to customers and donors. The Store Manager serves as the leader of the entire store and is accountable for creating a positive, productive, safe, and mission-focused environment for employees, volunteers, customers, donors, and the neighbors we serve. The ideal candidate combines strong business judgment with people leadership, operational discipline, and a genuine commitment to the mission of St. Vincent de Paul.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Sales, Financial Performance & Budget Management
  • Lead the store toward approved sales, net-income, and budget goals.
  • Understand annual and monthly sales budgets and establish clear daily, weekly, and monthly sales expectations.
  • Monitor sales performance, Profit & Loss information, payroll, staffing costs, supplies, and other controllable expenses.
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales, improve profitability, reduce unnecessary expense, and strengthen operational performance.
  • Develop and implement action plans when financial results are below expectations and communicate significant concerns or opportunities to the General Manager.
  • Protect organizational property, donated merchandise, and financial resources through responsible stewardship and adherence to purchasing and approval procedures. Employee Leadership & Development
  • Supervise Assistant Managers, Store Leads, employees, and volunteers while maintaining appropriate leadership coverage throughout operating hours.
  • Train, schedule, coach, and develop employees according to organizational procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels and create effective schedules while responsibly managing payroll.
  • Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, recognize strong performance, and address attendance, conduct, performance, and productivity concerns promptly and consistently.
  • Complete required performance reviews and employee documentation on time.
  • Cross-train employees, identify leadership potential, and develop Assistant Managers and Store Leads to take greater responsibility.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and foster a workplace free from gossip, favoritism, bullying, retaliation, and disrespect. Store Operations & Merchandising
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming store that meets SVDPWC standards.
  • Ensure opening and closing procedures, register areas, fitting rooms, restrooms, entrances, donation areas, backrooms, docks, and sales floors are consistently maintained.
  • Maintain effective merchandising, product presentation, product rotation, and movement of merchandise to the sales floor.
  • Regularly walk the store, observe operations firsthand, and respond quickly to operational issues.
  • Ensure store policies, procedures, and standards are consistently followed. Donations, Production & Product Flow
  • Maintain an efficient, welcoming donation-receiving operation and ensure donors are treated with appreciation and respect.
  • Monitor product quantity, quality, pricing, category needs, and production expectations to maintain strong product flow.
  • Ensure employees understand production goals and that sufficient merchandise is continually available to keep the sales floor full and changing.
  • Work cooperatively with Processing, Warehouse, Trucking, and other Store Managers regarding merchandise needs, transfers, and product flow.
  • Protect usable donated merchandise from unnecessary disposal and support the organization's "Let the Customer Decide" philosophy when merchandise is safe and appropriate for sale.
  • Ensure aged and unsold merchandise is handled according to organizational procedures. Customer, Donor & Mission Service
  • Maintain a welcoming, respectful customer and donor experience and ensure employees provide friendly, helpful service.
  • Respond professionally to customer concerns and ensure donors are thanked for supporting the organization and community.
  • Support neighbors using St. Vincent de Paul vouchers and assistance programs with dignity, discretion, and respect.
  • Help employees understand how thrift-store operations support the SVDPWC mission and connect their daily work to serving neighbors throughout Washington County. Cash Management, Asset Protection & Safety
  • Ensure cash-handling, register, safe, deposit, and discount procedures are followed accurately and consistently.
  • Investigate and report significant cash discrepancies and address suspected theft, fraud, or policy violations through the appropriate organizational process.
  • Protect keys, codes, equipment, merchandise, and organizational property.
  • Regularly inspect the store, donation areas, exterior, parking areas, entrances, exits, and workspaces for safety and maintenance concerns.
  • Ensure required safety training is completed and that incidents, accidents, injuries, and safety concerns are reported and documented promptly.
  • Maintain clear emergency exits and safe aisles, communicate facility needs, and coordinate approved maintenance with organizational leadership. Volunteers, Community & Organizational Teamwork
  • Welcome and support volunteers, identify meaningful volunteer opportunities, and provide appropriate direction and appreciation.
  • Develop positive relationships with customers, donors, businesses, churches, schools, and community organizations and represent St. Vincent de Paul professionally.
  • Maintain consistent communication with the General Manager and participate in leadership and management meetings.
  • Communicate important information to store leadership, employees, and volunteers and provide requested reports and information on time.
  • Work cooperatively with other Store Managers and organizational departments, sharing resources, employees, merchandise, and information when appropriate.
  • Bring concerns forward professionally, support organizational decisions once made, and work toward practical solutions.
Qualifications:
  • Retail management or comparable leadership experience required.
  • Strong understanding of sales, budgeting, payroll, and expense management.
  • Ability to read and understand basic financial and performance reports.
  • Strong employee leadership, coaching, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize multiple priorities and maintain accountability in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and organizational technology systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, volunteers, customers, donors, and community partners.
  • Ability to support and represent the mission and values of St. Vincent de Paul of Washington County.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent management experience preferred.
Physical & Scheduling Expectations:
  • Ability to work in an active retail environment and remain visible throughout the store.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to assist with normal retail and donation operations as needed.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on store and organizational needs.
  • Store Managers are expected to be available during key operating periods and adjust their schedules when leadership needs require it.
