Job Description
Job Overview The Associate Sales Engineer - Contractor Sales is a developmental technical sales position supporting NSWC's commercial mechanical contractor sales team. This individual will work directly with experienced Sales Engineers to support the selection, application, pricing, quoting, and sale of commercial HVAC equipment on construction projects throughout Southern California. The role combines technical HVAC knowledge, project analysis, customer interaction, and sales execution. The Associate Sales Engineer will initially focus on supporting established contractor accounts and active projects while developing a strong understanding of NSWC's product lines, customers, manufacturers, pricing practices, and sales process. This position is specifically intended to develop qualified individuals into an outside Contractor Sales Engineer role. As technical knowledge, customer relationships, commercial judgment, and sales capabilities develop, the Associate Sales Engineer will progressively take greater responsibility for customer interactions, quotations, smaller projects, and ultimately assigned contractor accounts and outside sales responsibilities. Responsibilities Contractor Sales Support Work closely with NSWC Contractor Sales Engineers to support commercial mechanical contractors throughout the bidding and sales process. Technical & Product Support Develop detailed working knowledge of NSWC's commercial HVAC equipment and airside product portfolio. Assist with equipment selection, sizing, application, and basic system analysis. Use manufacturer selection software and technical resources to develop equipment solutions. Review proposed equipment for compliance with project specifications and schedules. Respond to technical and product-related questions from mechanical contractors under the guidance of senior Sales Engineers and Application Engineers. Coordinate with NSWC Application Engineers and manufacturer technical resources when more advanced engineering support is required. Participate in manufacturer product training and continuing HVAC education. Customer & Sales Development Develop working relationships with project managers, estimators, engineers, purchasing personnel, and other key contacts at NSWC's mechanical contractor customers. Participate in customer meetings, project reviews, jobsite visits, manufacturer meetings, and sales calls with experienced Sales Engineers. Follow up with customers regarding quotations, equipment questions, project changes, bid status, and purchasing decisions. Develop an understanding of contractor buying practices, competitive positioning, pricing strategy, project risk, and negotiation. Gradually assume responsibility for selected quotations, smaller opportunities, and customer relationships as experience develops. Identify opportunities for additional NSWC products and solutions within assigned projects and accounts. Project Coordination & Handoff Coordinate with Project Managers and other internal personnel to ensure a clean transition from awarded sale to project execution. Provide complete quotation, scope, pricing, customer commitment, and manufacturer information at project handoff. Remain involved with the Sales Engineer as appropriate when commercial or customer issues arise following award. Develop an understanding of the complete project lifecycle from initial bid through submittal, release, shipment, startup, and closeout. Career Development This role is designed as a development path toward an outside Contractor Sales Engineer position. Progression will be based on demonstrated capability rather than time alone.
Development will generally include:
Mastery of NSWC products, systems, sales tools, and internal processes. Ability to independently prepare accurate HVAC equipment selections and quotations. Strong understanding of plans, specifications, construction documents, and mechanical systems. Increasing direct interaction with mechanical contractor customers. Demonstrated commercial judgment regarding scope, pricing, competition, and project risk. Ability to manage quotations and smaller sales opportunities independently. Development of strong customer relationships and effective sales skills. Progressive responsibility for contractor accounts and outside sales activity. Qualifications & Requirements Candidates should meet one or more of the following technical-background requirements: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or Relevant professional experience within the commercial HVAC industry, mechanical contracting, HVAC equipment sales, estimating, applications engineering, or a related field.In addition:
Basic understanding of HVAC systems and commercial mechanical equipment is strongly preferred. Ability or willingness to learn to read and interpret mechanical plans, specifications, schedules, and technical documents. Strong analytical and problem-solving ability. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable communicating directly with customers and developing professional customer relationships. Competitive, commercially minded, and interested in developing a career in technical sales. Ability to manage multiple quotations and priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven construction environment. Strong attention to detail, particularly related to pricing, equipment selections, and project scope. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. Experience with Bluebeam, CRM/ERP systems, HVAC selection software, or Acumatica is beneficial but not required. Ability and willingness to travel locally for customer meetings, jobsites, training, and other sales activities. Valid driver's license and ability to transition into regular outside customer-facing responsibilities. Preferred Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is technically capable but also has the personality and motivation to develop into a successful outside salesperson.Preferred backgrounds may include:
Mechanical Engineering graduate interested in technical sales rather than traditional consulting engineering. HVAC or mechanical contractor project engineer, estimator, or assistant project manager. HVAC manufacturer's representative sales support or applications employee. HVAC manufacturer applications or technical sales employee. Commercial HVAC inside salesperson seeking to move into outside sales. Successful candidates will demonstrate curiosity, initiative, accountability, communication skills, sound judgment, and a desire to build long-term relationships with mechanical contractors.
