During their terms of service, members restore and monitor impaired Sierra watersheds, educate local residents and visitors on environmental issues, and recruit and manage volunteers for various programs. SNAP members gain skills and technical training, are mentored by outstanding environmental leaders, and provide a meaningful contribution to the communities of the Sierra Nevada.

Position Title:
Restoration Coordinator SYRCL is the leading voice for the protection and restoration of the Yuba River and greater Yuba Watershed. Founded in 1983 through a rural, grassroots campaign to defend the South Yuba River from proposed hydropower dams, SYRCL has developed into a vibrant community organization with over 3,500 members and volunteers based in Nevada City. SYRCL is the leading regional supporter for creating resilient human and natural communities throughout the greater Yuba River basin by restoring creeks and rivers, restoring wild salmon populations, and inspiring and organizing people. SYRCL unites the community to protect and restore the Yuba River. Motivated love for this watershed, SYRCL engages in active stewardship, educates the public, and inspires volunteer engagement from the Sierra to the sea. Organizational/Program Goals 2026-27: Monitor results of planted riparian cuttings and container plants at Upper Long Bar and Rose Bar on the Lower Yuba River. Monitor vegetation and carbon cycling for our meadow and aspen restoration projects in Van Norden, Haypress West, Galiano Fen, Salmon Packer Creek, and Haskell Peak meadows. Support post-project biological monitoring efforts on juvenile salmonid rearing and spawning habitat restoration projects on the lower Yuba River. Assist with outreach to support meadow, forest health, and Lower Yuba habitat restoration projects. Conduct literature research in support of future restoration projects on the lower Yuba River, forest health, and mountain meadows. Support and expand on scotch broom challenge for invasive weed removal for Yuba watershed. Assist with Yuba River Cleanup, as a site captain for the event that trains local volunteers Support planning and coordination for the Enviro-fair event as part of the annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival Train volunteers to collect field data and input data into databases. Organize and maintain GIS files and ESRI Grant renewal. Training will be provided. Use GIS to create useful maps and display data, for ongoing restoration projects in Upper Watershed Meadows and the Lower Yuba River.

River Monitoring Coordinator The South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) works to protect and restore the Yuba River and the greater Yuba Watershed through community participation, education, and collaborative approaches to watershed management and restoration. SYRCL unites and inspires people to protect and restore the waters, forests, and communities of the Yuba River watershed. Motivated by love for this watershed, SYRCL engages in active stewardship, educates the public, and inspires volunteer engagement from the Sierra to the sea. Its Watershed Science Department informs priority issues and restoration opportunities through extensive monitoring and collaborative watershed assessment. SYRCL's volunteer scientist driven River Monitoring Program began in 2000 and utilizes over 50 volunteers to collect water quality data monthly from March to November at more than 37 sites throughout the watershed. In 2020, the publication of the on-line RiverDB () database created a repository for River Monitoring water quality data and a platform for greater community engagement and collaborative watershed assessment. The River Monitoring Program is considered the heart and a pillar of SYRCL's Watershed Science Department and helps with SYRCL's mission to unite the community to protect and restore the Yuba River watershed. Organizational/Program Goals 2026-27: SYRCL's Strategic Plan commits us to implementing a Monitoring Plan that builds on the strengths of this large body of data to "detect threats and impacts to the Yuba River and tributaries", and to "demand corrective action or protection measures." As a result, SYRCL partnered with The Sierra Fund (known today as Indigenous Futures Society) and Chico State University Department of Environmental Studies, to thoroughly analyze the past years of monitoring data and to outline a targeted approach to site selection and data collection. The resulting details how SYRCL will collect new data with the goal of using it to design real and effective remediation projects to fix identified problems in eight major areas of impact as feasible: Goal Areas include: Long-term Monitoring, Mine land streams, Dam affected reaches, Restoration Success Monitoring (water quality), Development Impacts in the Upper South Yuba River Watershed, Bacterial Contamination of Recreational Waters, Nutrient and Chemical Run-off, Invasive and Sensitive Species The full position descriptions for this and other positions are available on our website: www.sierranevadaalliance.org Questions?
