Job Summary We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the laboratory of Dr. Jay Brito Querido in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School. The lab uses cryo-electron microscopy and biochemical approaches to investigate the regulation of mRNA translation initiation and its implications for human health and disease. Responsibilities• The primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral Scientist will be to lead research focused on understanding the mechanism of mRNA translation in apicomplexan parasites. The successful candidate will apply a range of structural and biochemical approaches, including single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryoET), to dissect the mechanisms of translation initiation and its regulation in these organisms. This position offers access to state-of-the-art instrumentation available through the Life Sciences Institute and the Department of Biological Chemistry, including the Stellaris 5 Cryo-Confocal Microscope, Aquilos 2 cryo-FIB, and Titan Krios G4i. The candidate will be expected to engage actively in lab seminars and discussions, contribute to the direction of their own project and to other ongoing work in the group, assist in the training of lab members, and participate in the preparation of research publications. All work must be conducted in compliance with institutional and funding agency guidelines and according to best research practices. Required Qualifications• PhD in biological sciences or related field with at least 2-3 years of laboratory research experience. The ability to work productively in a team environment with people from diverse backgrounds, work with limited supervision to identify a broad range of techniques to achieve the project's primary goal. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to multi-task efficiently, work independently and be committed to research. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
