Job Description

The intern will work with the Zoo's reproductive biologist to collect, organize, and analyze data from a variety of projects. These include, but are not limited to, post-thaw evaluations of semen using both standard microscopy and computer-assisted motion analysis (CASA), analysis of reproductive behavior, and validating protocols for gamete banking of novel species. Opportunities for authorship are possible, if the level of involvement merit it. Participation in reproductive success evaluations, which involve working with zoo staff to address challenges that may limit our ability to achieve population sustainability goals will be required. Other expectations include conducting literature searches and discussing of how results apply to reproductive biology to the animals in our care, record keeping, giving educational tours, and other duties as assigned. This internship is grant-funded and aimed at providing practical experience in reproductive sciences. This internship is roughly divided into three areas: 1) assisting in the barn with reproductive projects on ungulates at the Zoo's WildCare Park, 2) working with scientific data and computer-based assignments, 3) lab work. The ideal applicant will have had class work relating to reproductive physiology, strong computer skills, and some prior research and animal handling experience. This is a full time (40 hour per week) 10-week paid internship. Applicants must have availability during normal business hours (8am-5pm) Monday through Friday.
