Job Title:
Laboratory Assistant Job Description The Laboratory Assistant supports petroleum, chemical, and refined product testing by collecting samples from client sites, maintaining sample integrity, and ensuring accurate documentation within the laboratory information management system. This role combines field work and laboratory activities, requires strict adherence to safety procedures, and plays a key part in delivering reliable analytical results in a dynamic, on-call work environment. Responsibilities Collect petroleum, chemical, crude oil, petrochemical, and refined product samples from client sites using a company vehicle while following established sampling procedures. Follow all established sampling protocols to ensure representative and reliable samples are obtained from each site. Accurately enter sample information, chain-of-custody documentation, and testing requests into the laboratory LIMS system. Maintain complete and accurate records for all samples, including labeling, custody, and test instructions. Adhere to all company, client, and industry safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment and compliance with laboratory and field standard operating procedures. Maintain sample integrity through proper handling, labeling, storage, and transportation practices from collection through delivery to the laboratory. Monitor and maintain laboratory and field inventory, including sampling supplies, containers, reagents, and safety equipment. Perform basic wet chemistry procedures such as titrations and distillations as required for sample analysis. Work independently in both field and laboratory environments while following established quality control and safety standards. Safely handle and transport sample containers and equipment, including lifting items up to 50 lbs as needed. Support quality control processes by following laboratory procedures and documenting results accurately. Communicate effectively with laboratory staff and field personnel to coordinate sampling activities and testing requirements. Remain available and responsive during on-call rotations to perform sampling and related duties as needed. Essential Skills Minimum 6 months of petroleum, oil and gas, or chemical sample collection experience. Experience working in laboratory and quality control environments. Basic knowledge of chemistry and wet chemistry techniques, including titrations and distillations. Ability to collect and handle crude oil and petrochemical samples safely and accurately. Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety, quality, and accurate documentation. Ability to work independently in both field and laboratory settings. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and safely handle sample containers and equipment. Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a company vehicle to travel between client sites. Ability to work a rotating schedule of 6 on-call days followed by 2 days off, with 24/7 availability during on-call rotations. Proficiency in entering data into a laboratory information management system (LIMS) or similar system. Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Familiarity with petroleum, crude oil, petrochemical, and refined product sampling procedures. Understanding of laboratory and field standard operating procedures and safety practices. Strong organizational skills to manage samples, documentation, and inventory. Effective communication skills to coordinate with laboratory and field personnel. Reliability and responsiveness in an on-call work environment. Work Environment This role involves a combination of field work at client sites and laboratory work in a controlled testing environment. The schedule consists of 6 consecutive on-call days followed by 2 days off, with employees on call 24 hours per day during their scheduled on-call rotation and compensated for all hours worked. Work is performed around petroleum, crude oil, petrochemical, and chemical products, using standard laboratory equipment and wet chemistry techniques such as titrations and distillations. The position requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, adherence to safety and standard operating procedures, and the ability to lift and move sample containers and equipment up to 50 lbs. Travel between client sites is required using a company vehicle, and the environment demands careful attention to sample integrity, accurate documentation, and consistent compliance with quality and safety standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Griffith, IN 46319. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
