The Division is comprised of three laboratory sections and a field services section with a combined total of 57 employees. This position is assigned to the Plant/Waste/Solution/Media (PWSM) lab. The PWSM lab analyzes plant tissue, waste & compost, agricultural waters and nutrient solutions, and soilless media for nutrient composition, in order to make recommendations to growers for responsible nutrient management. This position is primarily responsible for performing a range of moderately complex analytical testing on these materials. Duties include weighing samples using analytical balances, determination of alkalinity by chemical titration, measurement of pH and EC by electrode and auto-titration, chemical extractions for plant chloride, plant nitrate and saturated media, combustion analysis, ICP-OES, flow injection analysis, preparation of reagents, standards and other chemicals. . Moderate physical effort is required. This position is on his/her feet all day and is required to lift sample racks weighing 20 lbs. on an almost daily basis. This is a temporary position with the potential to become salaried with benefits. Candidate can expect that hours will be 40 per week, except during state holidays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED.

Working knowledge of the basic principles used in the laboratory application of chemistry and other related physical and biological sciences. Working knowledge of quality control practices, standard lab operating procedures, and laboratory safety. Ability to independently perform moderately complex laboratory tests and procedures and to record results with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, to understand and follow oral and written technical instructions, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

PREFERENCES. A B.S.

degree from an accredited college or university in a chemistry or a related scientific discipline is preferred. Laboratory experience including practical or research-related activities in analytical chemistry would be very helpful in fully preparing the individual for this work. Experience performing the analytical tests listed in the position description is preferred but not required.
