Job Overview We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Microbiologist to join our dynamic team. In this role, the Lead Lab Tech./Microbiologist is responsible for performing and overseeing laboratory and microbiological testing activities in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This role ensures that raw materials, in-process products, and finished goods meet company quality, food safety, and regulatory requirements. This position serves as a technical resource for the laboratory team, providing training, guidance, and support while helping to coordinate daily laboratory operations. This position is responsible for specialty testing programs, including pathogen and toxin analyses, equipment calibration and verification, hold and release decisions, and effective communication of quality and food safety results to production and management teams. Responsibilities Lead daily laboratory operations to ensure testing activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements Train, mentor, and support laboratory technicians by promoting technical proficiency, professional development, and adherence to quality and food safety standards. Maintain and promote Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and laboratory safety protocols at all times. Perform chemical analyses on raw materials, in-process products, finished pet food products, and treats to verify compliance with established quality specifications. Conduct microbiological testing and maintain proficiency with laboratory methods, including but not limited to the Neogen Molecular Detection System and other approved pathogen detection methodologies. Perform toxin testing and maintain proficiency with Neogen toxin testing methods and associated laboratory procedures. Accurately interpret analytical results and communicate findings, including out-of-specification results, to management and production personnel with appropriate urgency and follow-up actions. Support investigations of nonconforming materials, product holds, deviations, and food safety incidents by collecting data, documenting findings, and recommending corrective actions. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and verify laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: o NIR Analyzer o Computrac Moisture Analyzer o Moisture and Ash Ovens o Soxtec Fat Analyzer o Aqualab Water Activity Analyzer o LECO Protein Analyzer o Neogen Toxin Reader o Neogen Molecular Detection System Perform and document equipment calibrations, verifications, and preventive maintenance activities according to established schedules. Collect sterile samples of incoming raw materials for microbiological and quality testing prior to release for production use. Collect and prepare finished product samples for microbiological, chemical, and investigative testing as required. Lead and support hold and release activities, including reviewing laboratory data and ensuring compliance with product disposition requirements. Review production batch records and related documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with quality and food safety standards. Maintain ingredient and finished product retention samples in accordance with company procedures. Manage laboratory inventory levels, order testing supplies, and ensure sufficient materials are available to support operational needs. Assist with internal audits, inspections, customer inquiries, regulatory requests, and food safety initiatives as needed. Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure all testing documentation is completed in accordance with company, customer, and regulatory requirements. Partner closely with the Food Safety and Quality Manager to prioritize laboratory activities, improve workflows, and support continuous improvement initiatives. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Food Safety and Quality Manager or other members of management.
