Working within established project objectives and in collaboration with the Research and Operations teams, this role executes laboratory studies involving dental biomaterials, products, and equipment using standardized methods, sound laboratory practices, and advanced analytical instrumentation. The Senior Research Associate contributes to study planning, method development, data analysis, technical documentation, laboratory operations, and client deliverables. The position is expected to work independently on assigned testing activities, troubleshoot routine technical issues, maintain accurate and complete research records, and provide technical support and peer guidance to other research team members. This is a senior individual-contributor role and does not include direct supervisory responsibility. Key Responsibilities Laboratory research and study execution Execute assigned biomaterials laboratory studies from setup through data collection and documentation in accordance with approved protocols, project objectives, timelines, and quality expectations. Perform hands-on laboratory testing using relevant instrumentation and methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDX/EDS, Raman spectroscopy, micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT), mechanical testing, microscopy, and other equipment used by the Biomaterials Research Center. Support the development, adaptation, and documentation of test methods, protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs), and assist with method improvements based on project requirements and laboratory capabilities. Prepare samples, operate laboratory equipment, document test conditions, maintain complete research records, and follow established safety, quality, and data-integrity procedures. Data analysis and technical documentation Analyze, organize, and interpret laboratory data and verify calculations, observations, images, and supporting documentation for accuracy, consistency, repeatability, and completeness. Identify unexpected results and troubleshoot routine testing, sample-preparation, or equipment issues; escalate complex technical concerns and support follow-up testing or methodological adjustments as appropriate. Draft and contribute to study plans, methods and results sections, research summaries, client reports, tables, figures, and other technical deliverables that clearly and accurately communicate study findings. Project and client support Support project scoping and planning by providing technical input on testing methods, sample requirements, equipment needs, timelines, and feasibility in collaboration with the Research, Operations, and Sales teams. Participate in client kickoff, project update, and results-review discussions as needed, providing technical information related to assigned studies and helping translate client objectives into practical laboratory testing plans. Provide peer training, technical support, and knowledge sharing to research associates, technicians, interns, or other team members as appropriate, without direct supervisory authority. Laboratory operations and continuous improvement Maintain laboratory readiness by monitoring materials and supplies, supporting equipment maintenance and calibration activities, organizing research documentation, and helping ensure assigned work areas remain safe and functional. Review relevant scientific literature, testing standards, and emerging technologies to support existing methods, strengthen laboratory practices, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. Contribute ideas for new or improved testing services and research capabilities based on project experience, customer needs, and available laboratory resources. Scientific communication and team collaboration Collaborate with Marketing and other internal teams to support the accurate visual presentation and communication of research findings for approved educational, digital, print, video, podcast, and presentation formats. Support preparation for industry conferences, customer meetings, webinars, podcasts, videos, and other presentations when technical research input is needed. Maintain professional and collaborative relationships with internal colleagues, industry contacts, and external partners while protecting confidential and proprietary research information. Perform other research, laboratory, and project responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in materials science, biomaterials, biomedical engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, dental technology, or a closely related scientific field; a master's degree is preferred. Three or more years of relevant laboratory experience in biomaterials research, materials testing, dental materials, product development, or a comparable applied research environment. Experience with dental materials, dental products, medical devices, or clinically relevant materials testing is strongly preferred. Strong technical writing and documentation skills, including the ability to contribute to protocols, study records, technical reports, research summaries, and client-facing deliverables. Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain laboratory methods, results, and technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences. Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple assigned studies, priorities, deadlines, samples, and documentation requirements. Demonstrated attention to detail, reliability, sound technical judgment, and commitment to accurate, objective, and reproducible research. Technical Experience Hands-on experience with mechanical testing equipment and methods such as Universal Test Frames, Instron and/or Shimadzu systems, micro-hardness testing, handpiece performance testing, rotary cutting instrument testing, toothbrush abrasion testing, and sectioning or surface-preparation equipment is preferred. Experience with one or more specialized analytical platforms such as Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray microscopy/Micro-CT, light microscopy, light spectral analysis, scanning electron microscopy, EDS/EDX, or Raman spectroscopy; ability to learn additional instrumentation is expected. Ability to organize and analyze laboratory data, interpret technical results, maintain traceable records, and prepare accurate tables, figures, images, and written summaries. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and working familiarity with Adobe tools used for research documentation and technical deliverables. Ability to learn and consistently apply new testing methods, analytical software, instrumentation, and laboratory procedures as project needs evolve. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Materials Science, Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline. Experience with dental biomaterials, dental product evaluation, medical-device testing, or product research and development. Familiarity with relevant ASTM, ISO, or other recognized laboratory testing standards and experience applying standardized methods in a laboratory setting. Experience assisting with method development, method validation, SOP creation, or laboratory process improvement. Experience contributing to technical reports, research publications, posters, conference abstracts, presentations, or other scientific communications. Experience participating in client-facing research discussions, project updates, or presentations of technical findings. Work Environment This position is laboratory based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The role requires regular hands-on laboratory work, use of specialized research equipment, and collaboration with internal teams. Occasional travel may be required for industry conferences, client meetings, training, or other business needs.
