J Overview A private family is seeking an Assistant Aquarist to work directly under its Senior Aquarist, helping care for a large private aquatic collection. The property has multiple freshwater and saltwater display aquariums, including reef, FOWLR, anemone, and seahorse systems. It also has a large koi pond, dedicated sump and filtration rooms, and advanced life-support equipment. This role offers hands-on experience with high-end aquatic systems. Responsibilities Assist with daily care and maintenance of all aquariums, the koi pond, and sump rooms Test and log water quality (salinity, temperature, pH, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrates, phosphates, ammonia) Perform water changes, cleaning, filter maintenance, and algae control Feed livestock according to established protocols and report changes in behavior, appearance, or appetite Help maintain pumps, skimmers, RO/DI, dosing systems, lighting, heaters/chillers, and controllers Support quarantine, acclimation, and treatment procedures Keep equipment areas clean, organized, and safe Track supplies and keep accurate maintenance and livestock records Assist with repairs, upgrades, livestock additions, and emergencies Requirements 2+ years of hands-on saltwater aquarium experience (professional preferred; serious hobbyists considered) Working knowledge of marine water chemistry, filtration, and livestock health Koi or pond experience and coursework in marine biology, aquaculture, or a related field are a plus Follows direction and protocols closely, and can work independently when needed Highly discreet, reliable, and professional around the family, household staff, and guests Able to lift 50 lbs and to stand, bend, kneel, and work around water and equipment for long periods Schedule Monday-Friday, daytime hours, with flexibility for occasional weekends, special projects, and after-hours emergencies.
