The New Mexico Department of Wildlife's wildlife education program leads the Department's effort to connect people with wildlife and conservation in ways that increase understanding, appreciation, and responsible behavior toward the natural world. They will develop and produce informational products for the general public, K 12 students, and educators on topics relating to wildlife, habitat, and conservation. This includes developing interactive lesson plans focused on terrestrial organisms (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects) and their habitats that can be duplicated and shared with educators, volunteers, and contractors. They also plan public events that engage the public in wildlife conservation and watching. How does it get done? The Wildlife Education Position requires experience developing and producing instructional products for the general public, K12 students, and educators on wildlife and conservation, teach skills to help people enjoy wildlife such as photography or wildlife watching, etc.
They will accomplish this by:
Increase the public's understanding of conserving New Mexico's wildlife by offering in-person and virtual programs. Provide in-school and community programs focused on educating teachers, students and the public about New Mexico's aquatic and terrestrial wildlife and how the Department manages those species. Develop interactive, science-based curriculum and train teachers, contractors, and volunteers, providing them with knowledge, skills, and support to promote conservation throughout New Mexico. Develop educational content to reach youth and adult learners who are interested in wildlife, fisheries, Species of Greatest Conservation Needs (SGCN), ecosystems, and conservation. Develop and provide conservation education training to help share the Department's conservation message. Provide watchable wildlife (wildlife viewing) opportunities for people of all skill levels and ability levels. Support and assist educational program managers with large public events, including large events, Outdoor Adventure Show, Youth Hunter Education Challenges, R3 and marketing efforts, Archery programs, off-highway vehicle safety and awareness programs, conservation education programs, fish and wildlife projects, marketing and informational efforts, etc. Who are the customers? Minimum Qualification Associate's Degree and three (3) years of experience in program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions Work will be performed primarily in an office or indoor setting, but on occasion will be performed in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions and in close proximity to fish and wildlife. Weekend and varied hours occasionally will be required for this position. Office work will include sitting, standing, bending, and lifting up to 60 pounds. Outdoor work will include standing, walking, bending and occasional lifting up to 60 pounds. Requirements will include frequent operation and travel in a motor vehicle, and may occasionally include OHV operation, horseback riding, watercraft operation and aircraft travel.
