West Texas Wildlife Preserve (WTWP) is a 240-acre ranch-style facility located just outside of Abilene, TX, dedicated to the conservation and genetic diversity of over 75 species through collaboration with zoological institutions. Home to more than 1,000 animals, WTWP is a rapidly growing preserve with several new exhibits underway. Our team is committed to providing exceptional care for the animals in our stewardship while promoting education, conservation, and responsible wildlife management. We are seeking a hardworking, dependable, and self-motivated Ranch Hand to join our team. This position plays a vital role in daily animal care, facility maintenance, and overall preserve operations. Responsibilities Provide daily feeding and watering for assigned animals following established diets and protocols. Clean and maintain animal enclosures, holding areas, and surrounding habitats according to USDA and facility standards. Assist with habitat upkeep, fence maintenance, landscaping, and construction or repair projects (welding experience preferred). Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, or abnormal behavior and promptly report findings to supervisors. Support veterinary staff with handling, medical procedures, and treatments as needed. Operate vehicles and equipment safely, including ATVs, tractors, and utility vehicles. Maintain tools, machinery, and work areas in clean, working condition. Perform groundskeeping duties such as mowing, weed control, and debris removal. Adhere to all safety, animal welfare, and biosecurity protocols to ensure the well-being of both animals and staff. Provide weekend, holiday, and occasional after-hours coverage as needed. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required; degree or coursework in Animal Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field preferred. 6 months to 1 year of experience working with animals (ranch, farm, zoo, or veterinary setting preferred). Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to follow detailed instructions. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Comfortable operating ATVs, tractors, and small equipment. Physically capable of lifting 50-75 lbs and performing strenuous outdoor labor. Willing and able to work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. Ability to use common hand, power, and yard tools safely. Housing not provided. Physical and Environmental Requirements Work is primarily outdoors in a rural ranch environment. Must be able to walk, bend, climb, and stand for extended periods. Exposure to animals, allergens, dust, and cleaning agents is routine. Must observe strict safety standards when working around wildlife and equipment.
