Teacher Scale Position Summary The position is responsible for creating a classroom environment favorable to the learning and personal growth of middle and high school students enrolled in an alternative education setting. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function. The requirements and qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Essential Functions Collaborates with teachers, administrators, parents, school counselors, and related service providers to develop the overall educational plan for students enrolled in the alternative education setting. Assists in developing and implementing an individual education service and transition plan for students enrolled in the alternative education setting. Instruct students in a program of study that meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade-level standards. Develops plans and supplementary materials that are compatible with the division's basic instructional philosophy and are congruent with course/state standards. Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroup of students. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to utilize the available instruction time best and engage students actively. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors. Evaluates students' academic and social growth, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records, including attendance reports and other activities as required. Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress. Supervises and monitors student movement. Administers standardized testing per division testing practices. Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities. Participates in student and parent activities. Performs any other related duties as assigned by school administrators. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of subject(s) taught. Knowledge of secondary and special education principles, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching. Knowledge of school division rules, regulations, and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior. Ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents. Qualifications, Education and Experience Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher's license or certification with appropriate endorsement in a secondary core content subject area (Math or Science preferred); or Previous licensed secondary teaching experience in public schools. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Physical Requirements Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in written form. Regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handling or feeling, and repetitive motions. Requires frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds. Frequently requires walking and occasionally requires standing, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Work has standard vision requirements; visual inspection involves minor defects and small parts. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas through the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, receive detailed information through oral communications, or make fine distinctions in sound. Requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data. Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environment; however, the employee must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle or equipment and be mobile enough to travel and monitor all aspects of the school program in the settings within the area of assignment. Occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and bloodborne pathogens and may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment. Special Requirements Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board. May require the ability to acquire a valid driver's license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
