Senior Operations Engineering Engineer The York Independent System Operator $79,456—$140,000 USD United States, York, Rensselaer 10 Krey Boulevard (Show on map) May 08, 2026 The York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state. The York Independent System Operator (NYISO) (Rensselaer, NY) seeks a Senior Operations Engineering Engineer to determine system reliability transfer limits, assist management in the review of NYISO controlled and secured facilities in the areas of system studies, maintenance and testing of Power System Protection systems, and reporting and compliance. Will also develop engineering studies and analysis to assist management to make engineering-based recommendations to internal functions, Market Participant committees and the general public. Participate in NERC, NPCC, Regional, and NYISO study groups. Specifically, duties will include the following responsibilities: Perform analytical engineering system studies in the following: NYISO seasonal operating studies, NERC, NPCC and Inter-Regional study support and, when requested, provide Transmission Planning support.
Examples of studies include:
seasonal reliability assessments, thermal, voltage, and transient stability studies, short circuit studies, Inter-Regional transfer analysis and reliability assessments. Conduct detailed analysis of system events and disturbances. Review system events and performance after-the-fact for compliance with NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC Standards, Criteria, and Rules. Support Regional Market Coordination through the calculation and evaluation of distribution factors. Maintain a detailed electric power system models for the NYCA, incorporating the most accurate system representation for the neighboring Areas to represent the specific study conditions for thermal, voltage, stability short circuit analysis. Conduct reviews of NYISO controlled and secured facilities, standards and practices for installation, maintenance and testing of bulk power protective relay systems. Evaluate the effectiveness of computer simulation programs and/or other tools to ensure the safe and reliable operations of the NYISO transmission and generation resources. Prepare and maintain of NYISO technical support documentation. Advise and confer with engineers in review meetings to review analysis and develop recommendations and conclusions. Provide technical support to Operations and Planning and Market Monitoring staff. Participate on internal and external committees, project teams and Market Participant working groups. Provide technical oversight to Associate Engineers. Maintain a detailed electric power system model of the NYCA in the NERC Interchange Distribution Calculator (IDC). Administer access to IDC for NYISO staff and coordinate, where necessary, data mapping between the IDC and NYISO data sourcing applications. Senior Engineers assist others to understand technical information, participate in committees, project and meetings as the department's Subject Matter Expert and recommend procedure and policy changes to manager. Conduct detailed analysis of Restoration evaluations, updates of NYISO Restoration Material and serve as a Subject Matter Expert. Requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a related technical field. The successful candidate must also have two (2) years of experience as an Engineer in the energy field, to include two (2) years of experience with the following: Performing blackstart compliance studies; Conducting motor start studies during extreme weather scenarios; Implementing electromagnetic transient tools to analyze surge protection requirements; UtilizingPSSE, TSAT, EMTP-RV, ETAP
