Job Title:
Marine Painter / Marine Laborer Job Description This role supports high-priority U.S. Navy corrosion mitigation and ship repair projects in Hawaii by performing shipboard preservation, painting, and industrial marine labor aboard active naval vessels. You will work in a fast-paced shipyard and shipboard environment, assisting with coating applications, surface preparation, and cleanup while following strict safety and NAVSEA standards. This position offers immediate deployment and the opportunity to build specialized skills in marine coatings, corrosion control, and fleet sustainment. Responsibilities Perform shipboard painting, touch-ups, and preservation on a variety of ship structures and components. Carry out sanding, grinding, chipping, masking, and other surface preparation tasks to ensure proper coating adhesion. Assist technicians with coating application, including mixing, handling, and applying primers, coatings, and preservation materials. Support material handling activities such as moving, staging, and organizing paint, tools, and preservation supplies. Apply coatings and preservation materials inside ship tanks, bilges, voids, and other confined compartments in accordance with procedures. Perform cleaning and post-application cleanup, including removal of masking and proper disposal of materials. Work aboard ships, piers, dry docks, and industrial marine facilities while adhering to strict safety protocols and NAVSEA standards. Follow confined space entry procedures and safety requirements when working in tanks, voids, and other restricted areas. Operate basic pneumatic and electric tools required for surface preparation and coating work. Complete assigned tasks on schedule in a high-tempo, project-driven environment with frequent overtime. Comply with all Navy base access, security, and DBIDS requirements when entering shipyards and naval installations. Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to coordinate work, report progress, and address issues promptly. Maintain strong attendance, reliability, and follow-through to support critical project timelines and fleet readiness. Essential Skills Shipboard painting experience with the ability to perform preservation, coating, sanding, prepping, and masking on Navy vessels. Shipboard paint experience with 2+ years preferred in marine or industrial environments. Ability to apply coatings, primers, and preservation materials inside ship tanks, bilges, voids, and other compartments. Understanding of marine coating processes, including surface preparation, grinding, sanding, masking, and cleanup activities. Prior shipyard, ship repair, or industrial/manufacturing experience strongly preferred. Ability to obtain and maintain DBIDS access; current DBIDS or ability to obtain immediately is required. Ability to work safely in confined spaces, industrial marine environments, and at heights. Immediate availability for deployment and readiness to begin work on short notice. Ability to work overtime and weekends as project needs require. Capability to lift 50+ pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks. Comfort working in shipboard environments, including active industrial areas and deckplate conditions. Strong work ethic, reliability, and consistent attendance. Effective communication skills and the ability to follow instructions and safety procedures. Ability to meet Navy base access and onsite security requirements. Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Experience with marine coatings, including understanding temperatures, cure times, mixing ratios, and proper application techniques. Experience with confined space entry procedures and tank preservation work. Experience with marine blasting or coating removal, including ultra-high-pressure water jetting. Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items related to preservation and shipboard work. Firewatch or tank watch experience in industrial or shipyard environments. OSHA-10 or OSHA-Shipyard safety certification. Experience working on Navy platforms such as CVNs, DDGs, LCS, or amphibious ships. Familiarity with Navy ship systems layouts and typical shipboard spaces. Demonstrated ability to operate basic pneumatic and electric tools safely and effectively. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship in preservation and coating tasks. Why Work Here? Work takes place in confined spaces, at heights, and in busy industrial areas where heavy equipment and shipboard systems are in use. Personal protective equipment is required at all times and is provided by the employer or client. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
