Job Overview Alpha Structural is seeking an experienced Director of Planning & Engineering to lead our engineering, drafting, and permitting operations. This executive leadership role is responsible for ensuring engineering projects are designed accurately, permitted efficiently, and delivered on schedule while maintaining the highest standards of technical excellence and quality. The ideal candidate is an experienced California Professional Engineer who enjoys leading teams, improving processes, mentoring engineers, and solving complex structural challenges. Duties Lead and oversee all engineering, drafting, and permitting operations. Review and approve structural calculations, engineering plans, redlines, and technical documents. Manage, mentor, and develop engineers, drafters, and permitting personnel. Coordinate with production, project management, and sales to ensure projects remain on schedule. Conduct structural observations, site visits, and provide technical guidance when field revisions are required. Ensure compliance with California Building Code and applicable engineering standards. Monitor departmental performance, project schedules, production metrics, budgets, and engineering revenue. Lead planning meetings and establish departmental priorities to ensure efficient workflow and project completion. Qualifications Active California Structural Engineer (SE) license (Required). Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architecture. Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience. Minimum 5 years of engineering leadership or management experience. Minimum 5 years of experience with plan check submittals, permitting, and engineering operations. Extensive experience designing and reviewing structural systems, including concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and foundation systems. Strong understanding of the California Building Code (CBC), ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, NDS, and other applicable structural design standards. Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit. Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and project management skills. Ability to mentor engineers, manage multiple departments, and drive operational efficiency.
