Do you enjoy tackling real-world challenges and making sense of complex information? Christchurch City Council is looking for a motivated student or recent graduate to help shape how we manage some of the city's most valuable natural assets. This paid summer internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of Christchurch's first Green Infrastructure Management Plan, helping establish a more strategic and evidence-based approach to managing natural areas across our parks network. About the opportunity | Ko te whai wāhitanga nei Christchurch City Council manages a diverse range of natural assets, including reserves, urban forests and other ecologically significant green spaces. These areas provide important biodiversity, environmental, recreational and climate resilience benefits, but they are not currently managed through the same structured asset management approach used for many other Council assets. Working alongside the Parks Asset Management team, you will: Review the IPWEA Green Infrastructure Management Manual and related industry guidance. Research how councils in New Zealand, Australia and Canada manage green infrastructure. Analyse existing Council asset information, maps and reports. Help define Christchurch's green infrastructure portfolio and asset hierarchy. Develop a draft Green Infrastructure Management Plan. Identify opportunities to improve long-term maintenance, renewal, risk management and investment planning. This is not a "filing and administration" internship. You'll be contributing to a real piece of strategic work that will help inform how Christchurch's parks and natural areas are managed into the future. About you | Ko Koe Tēnei This opportunity is ideal for a Master's, Honours, final-year undergraduate student, or recent graduate in environmental management, environmental science, sustainability, planning, ecology, biodiversity, asset management, geography, or a related discipline. You'll be curious, analytical and self-motivated, with strong research and written communication skills and an interest in applying your knowledge to a real-world challenge. Previous asset management experience is not required and mentoring and support will be provided throughout the internship. What's in it for you? He aha ngā hua ki a koe? The experience will provide valuable insight into how local government manages and plans for natural assets while contributing to a project with real-world impact.
