Job Description

The Office of the Illinois Senate President seeks a thoughtful, independent, detail-oriented professional with strong organizational and interpersonal skills to work directly with a member of the Illinois Senate as a legislative assistant. Exceptional candidates will be able to participate in a fast-paced environment that frequently includes extended hours. Regular duties include constituent casework, maintenance of bill files and materials important to the senator's legislative agenda, and office administration including scheduling/calendar maintenance, meeting organization, and other duties at the discretion of the legislator. An understanding of the Illinois legislative process and dynamics is preferred. Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, two professional references no later than Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Interviews will be conducted virtually and/or in-person at a time to be determined by the parties. The Senate President, Senator Don Harmon, is the presiding officer of the 59-member Illinois Senate and the leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus. The Senate President shares primary responsibility for legislative procedures and operations. The Office assists in formation, passage and implementation of legislative policy initiatives. The Senate Democratic Caucus is one of the largest super majorities in the country with 40 members representing all parts of the State.
