Job Summary Job Summary Position Summary Under the general direction of the site administrator or designee, the Substitute School Counselor provides short-term, as-needed counseling support to students enrolled in LACOE schools and programs. The Substitute School Counselor supports continuity of services by assisting with academic counseling, social-emotional support, graduation planning, post-secondary preparation, transition planning, and related counseling duties during staff absences, vacancies, or periods of increased need. The Substitute School Counselor may serve students in juvenile court schools, county community schools, specialized high schools, or other locations where LACOE counselors are present. This position requires a student-centered, equity-focused, and collaborative approach to supporting at-promise youth, including students who may be justice-involved, transitioning between educational placements, or in need of individualized academic, social-emotional, college, career, or transition support. The Substitute School Counselor works collaboratively with school administrators, school counseling teams, teachers, students, families/caregivers, probation staff when applicable, community partners, and other educational partners to support student success, school engagement, and continuity of counseling services. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education:
Master's degree in school counseling, counseling and guidance, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Experience:
Experience providing school counseling services in a K-12 educational setting is preferred. Experience supporting at-promise youth, justice-involved youth, transition-age youth, or students with diverse academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary needs is highly desirable.
License or Certification:
Must possess a valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling. An added authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance is preferred.
