POSITION DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the area Dean, the UMOJA counselor will be responsible for providing academic, career, and personal counseling to diverse student populations of Monterey Peninsula College. Based in the Umoja Village/Office, the Umoja counselor is expected to coordinate and facilitate a variety of workshops utilizing the UMOJA Community statewide practices for new and continuing UMOJA students and serve as a liaison with the different college communities, community agencies, and private sector organizations in matters concerning Unity students' pursuit of academic achievement. Other duties may include classroom presentations, outreach activities, evening and Saturday assignments. The Counseling Department provides a welcoming and inclusive space for students to identify their goals and pathways which we hope will culminate in successful graduation and/or transfer to a university that aligns with their career aspirations and gainful employment. The UMOJA counselor will be an integral part of the Counseling department's and the College's initiatives as this position must integrate collaboratively and skillfully with campus units not only in Student Services but also Academic Affairs. This position may require assignments in the evenings, weekends, or at off-campus locations including online counseling services. The UMOJA Counselor assists African American and other student populations in transitioning into and connecting with the campus community, enhancing cultural and educational experiences, and increasing persistence and retention rates to ultimately achieve their educational goals. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching counseling courses; leading workshops including weekly Porch Talks, assisting with orientations, and seminars; and assisting in developing and implementing necessary retention programs to meet program participant needs in support of the advancement of the vision, mission, and values of the Monterey Peninsula College District. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Provide in-person and online academic, transfer, career, and personal counseling in the Counseling department and other assigned areas as part of Guided Pathways and other initiatives. Assist in the development of cultural activities, field trips, and on-campus events that focus on building motivation, self-esteem, and academic success for African American students. Counsel students who are on probation or subject to dismissal and assist them to create a plan for success. Collaborate and coordinate with campus resources to provide cultural activities, field trips and refer students to existing resources that focus on building motivation, self-esteem, and academic success for African American and other underrepresented students. Collaborate with the SOAR department and First Year Experience program to coordinate recruitment of Umoja students. Utilize case management techniques that support student outreach, retention, and completion. Teach counseling guidance courses, conduct orientations, and provide presentations to a diverse student population. The ideal candidate will develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse, first generation, and/or are historically underserved. • and co-requisite clearances, academic renewal, grade repeats, fourth attempts, pass/no pass, credit for prior learning, catalog rights, course substitutions, and graduation petitions.

Participate in professional development, curriculum development, program review, and the development and assessment of student learning and/or service area outcomes at the course and program level. Maintain current knowledge in subject matter areas and effective student support strategies/ interventions. Engage in regional and statewide Umoja consortium activities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR The equivalent. Applicants must submit an equivalency form. AND Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. (

A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
