An Academic or Guidance Counselor provides guidance to students in elementary, middle and high schools to help them succeed academically and socially. Works with school teachers and administrators to address problems that affect student performance, and identifies resources for students and families. Helps high school students to plan academic course work and advises on the college search and application process.

Position Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and student-centered School Counselor to support the academic, social-emotional, and career development needs of students in North St. Louis County schools. The School Counselor will work collaboratively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to promote student success, well-being, and positive school climate.
The ideal candidate will provide counseling services, crisis intervention, academic planning, and guidance programs that support the overall development of students across diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Essential Responsibilities
Provide individual and group counseling services to students experiencing academic, social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
Assist students in developing educational, personal, and career goals.
Support student academic achievement through intervention plans and progress monitoring.
Conduct classroom guidance lessons focused on social-emotional learning, conflict resolution, and life skills.
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address student needs.
Provide crisis response and intervention services when necessary.
Consult with parents and guardians regarding student concerns and available resources.
Assist in developing and implementing school-wide prevention and support programs.
Maintain accurate records, documentation, and confidential student information in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, parent conferences, and student support planning.
Connect students and families with community resources and support services.
Attend professional development, staff meetings, and required school activities.
Qualifications
Master's Degree in School Counseling, Guidance and Counseling, or a related field required.
Must hold an active Missouri School Counselor certification and be properly certified through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
Ability to verify DESE certification status prior to employment.
Previous school counseling experience preferred.
Knowledge of student development, social-emotional learning, and counseling best practices.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
Experience working with diverse student populations preferred.
Preferred Skills
Crisis intervention and conflict resolution experience.
Knowledge of MTSS, PBIS, and other student support frameworks.
Experience conducting individual and group counseling sessions.
Strong organizational and case management skills.
Ability to build effective relationships with students, families, and staff.
Familiarity with college and career readiness programming, academic planning, and student support services.
