General Statement of Duties The successful candidate will provide leadership support a comprehensive secondary school counseling program that promotes students' academic, career, and personal/social development through both individual and group services. As a student advocate and a member of the educational team, the counselor will take a proactive role in supporting, influencing, and enhancing student learning. Responsibilities include consulting and collaborating with teachers, administrators, support staff, families, and community resource partners; coordinating appropriate services for students; and serving as a liaison between the school, community agencies, and post‑secondary opportunities. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide managerial and organizational leadership for the school counseling program and its counseling team. Essential Duties Provides managerial and organizational leadership for the school's counseling program and its counseling team. Serves as an active member of the school leadership team Provides counseling for students on personal problems, careers, peer relationships, and attendance problems Conducts small and large group guidance sessions Maintains and updates student cumulative folders Communicates with parents and agency representatives concerning student problems Designs and implements behavior modification programs for students Coordinates teacher and parent conferences as needed Interprets test data and student records for parents and teachers Plays a major role in Child Study activities Daily attendance Engaged and on task Performs other duties as required Must have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum, instruction, and counseling/guidance theory and practice. Counseling skills must include problem identification/analysis skills and basic therapy resolution. Communication skills, both oral and written, must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of the clientele, professional staff, and other community agencies. Must be able to organize and carry out student activity programs; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additional Information This is a 12-month (260-day) position with a contractual start date of July 1, 2026. Salary will be prorated based on the official start date. This assignment carries a 5% stipend increase above the candidate's annual compensation. This position will include a minimum, $1,788, small Department chair stipend. Minimum Requirements Post-graduate certification, licensure, or endorsement in school counseling issued by the Virginia Department of Education. Master's degree with an emphasis in guidance and/or school counseling. Minimum of three (3) years of successful school counseling experience preferred. The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.
