Job Description

The GEARS Instructor (Giving Everyone a Role in Society) provides instruction, coaching, and support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enhance their independence, employability, and community participation. The instructor delivers curriculum in workplace readiness, career exploration, social and communication skills, functional academics, technology, self-determination, and independent living skills. Responsibilities include instructional planning, student progress monitoring, documentation and recordkeeping, employer and community engagement, and collaboration with college staff and external support agencies. The position is committed to helping students achieve their educational, personal, and employment goals through inclusive and individualized learning experiences. The GEARS Instructor reports directly to the Director of College and Career Readiness. The following duties are representative of the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may be assigned additional duties as required. Recruit, enroll, orient, and support students participating in the GEARS program and complete all required registration and intake documentation. Assess student strengths, interests, abilities, support needs, and career goals to develop individualized learning and success plans. Conduct student conferences to establish short- and long-term educational, employment, independent living, and personal development goals. Plan and deliver engaging individual and group instruction focused on workforce readiness, career exploration, self-advocacy, communication, digital literacy, financial literacy, health and wellness, and independent living skills. Utilize evidence-based instructional practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), assistive technology, and differentiated instruction to support diverse learning needs. Foster an inclusive, supportive, and student-centered learning environment that promotes confidence, independence, self-determination, and lifelong learning. Develop and implement curriculum aligned with GEARS program goals and workforce development competencies. Provide instruction and experiential learning opportunities that strengthen workplace behaviors, employability skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and professionalism. Coordinate and support community-based learning experiences, service-learning projects, job shadowing opportunities, internships, and other work-based learning activities. Collaborate with employers, community agencies, Vocational Rehabilitation personnel, families, caregivers, and other partners to support student success and transition goals. Monitor, evaluate, and document student progress toward educational, employment, and personal development objectives. Maintain accurate student records, attendance, assessments, progress reports, and program documentation in accordance with college, state, and federal guidelines. Implement appropriate accommodations, modifications, and support strategies to ensure equitable access to learning opportunities. Assist students in developing social, communication, interpersonal, and self-advocacy skills needed for success in work and community settings. Promote student engagement in campus activities, clubs, events, and community experiences that enhance social inclusion and belonging. Assist with program planning, curriculum enhancement, instructional material selection, and continuous improvement initiatives. Maintain classroom, laboratory, and instructional resources, including technology, adaptive equipment, supplies, and learning materials. Maintain confidentiality of student records and sensitive information in accordance with applicable laws and institutional policies. Participate in professional development, workshops, conferences, and training related to disability services, workforce readiness, adult education, and inclusive instructional practices. Demonstrate proficiency with instructional technologies, learning management systems, and data management platforms required for the position. Maintain security and appropriate use of college technology resources and information systems. Assist with marketing, recruitment, outreach, and community awareness efforts to increase participation in the GEARS program. Serve on college committees, task forces, and program-related initiatives as assigned by the supervisor. Support the mission of the College by fostering an environment of respect, accessibility, inclusion, and student success. Perform other professional responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of College and Career Readiness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Function in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction High School Curriculum Must be punctual, professional, and ethically conduct oneself. Proficiently operate a computer and related software. Proven ability to concurrently address issues of various levels of complexity. Proven knowledge and skill in the use of advanced features of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs and Presentation Software. Skill in organizing, planning, and coordinating meetings and travel arrangements. Proficient in technology skills and the ability to teach others. EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill, and abilities.
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Skills Required:
Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Education or a related field. Good written and oral communication, and time management skills.
Preferred :
Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Education, specifically in Special Education.
Experience Required:
Some teaching experience.
Preferred:
Some experience teaching at a community college
