The DSP will support individuals in achieving the goals identified in their Individual Program Plan (IPP) while promoting independence, dignity, personal choice, safety, community participation, and quality of life. The successful candidate will provide respectful hands-on assistance, encourage skill development, communicate effectively with individuals and their support teams, and maintain a safe and supportive home environment. This position requires patience, reliability, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a genuine commitment to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to live as independently and meaningfully as possible. Key ResponsibilitiesPerson-Centered Direct Support Provide individualized support based on each person's needs, preferences, abilities, routines, and IPP goals. Promote dignity, privacy, autonomy, self-direction, and informed choice in all interactions. Encourage individuals to participate in decisions regarding their daily routines, activities, meals, personal care, and community involvement. Build respectful and professional relationships with individuals while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Support individuals in developing and maintaining independent living skills. Activities of Daily Living and Personal Care Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, oral hygiene, and mobility, according to individual needs and established care plans. Provide assistance with meal preparation, eating, laundry, housekeeping, and other household tasks as appropriate. Support individuals in maintaining a clean, comfortable, and safe living environment. Use appropriate body mechanics, transfer techniques, and safe lifting practices when assisting with mobility or transfers. Health and Medication Support Monitor and document changes in an individual's physical or behavioral condition and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate supervisor or healthcare professional. Monitor and record vital signs when required by the individual's care plan or assigned responsibilities. Assist with medication routines and/or self-administration of medications only within the scope of training, authorization, and applicable policies and regulations. Follow medication-safety procedures, including proper storage, documentation, and safeguarding of medications. Recognize potential health or safety concerns and respond according to established procedures. Community Integration and Skill Development Assist individuals with participating in community activities, appointments, recreational activities, social events, employment-related activities, and other meaningful experiences. Encourage development of transportation, shopping, cooking, money-management, communication, and other independent-living skills as appropriate. Support individuals in developing relationships and participating in community life. Encourage opportunities for individuals to pursue personal interests, hobbies, education, employment, and social activities. Behavioral and Emotional Support Provide calm, respectful, and supportive assistance to individuals experiencing behavioral, emotional, or situational challenges. Follow individualized behavior-support strategies and established safety procedures. Recognize changes in behavior or condition and communicate concerns promptly. Use approved, person-centered approaches and avoid unnecessary restrictions on individual choice and independence. Documentation and Communication Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided, activities, observations, incidents, health concerns, and other required information. Follow the individual's IPP and applicable service-delivery requirements. Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, families/authorized representatives, healthcare professionals, and other members of the individual's support team as appropriate. Participate in staff meetings, training, care-plan reviews, and other required team activities. Protect confidential information and maintain professional standards when handling individual records. Safety and Emergency Responsibilities Maintain a safe residential environment and identify potential hazards. Follow emergency preparedness procedures and respond appropriately to medical, behavioral, environmental, and other emergencies. Follow required procedures for reporting and documenting special incidents and safety concerns. Maintain awareness of each individual's specific health, behavioral, mobility, communication, and emergency-support needs. Follow applicable agency, Community Care Licensing, California Department of Developmental Services, and GGRC-related requirements and policies. Transportation Safely transport individuals to medical appointments, community activities, employment/day programs, shopping, recreational activities, and other approved destinations when transportation is part of the individual's service plan. Follow vehicle-safety procedures and maintain a safe and professional environment during transportation. Maintain a valid driver's license and meet applicable agency requirements for driving individuals. Minimum Qualifications and Requirements High school diploma/GED preferred; equivalent experience may be considered depending on the position and applicable requirements. Previous experience as a Direct Support Professional, caregiver, personal care assistant, residential care worker, behavioral support staff, or similar role is preferred. Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities , including autism, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or related developmental conditions, is strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to provide respectful, patient, and person-centered support to individuals with varying levels of independence and support needs. Ability to assist with ADLs and personal care while respecting individual dignity, privacy, and choice. Ability to understand and follow an individual's Individual Program Plan (IPP) and applicable service instructions. Ability to accurately document services, observations, health concerns, incidents, and other required information. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary/support team. Ability to recognize and appropriately report health, safety, behavioral, and environmental concerns. Ability to follow medication-safety procedures and complete required medication-related training. CPR and First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain certification as required by the employer. Ability to complete required DSP, health, safety, behavioral, medication, emergency-preparedness, and other job-specific training. Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect the privacy, dignity, and rights of individuals receiving services. Ability to safely perform physical duties, including standing, walking, bending, assisting with transfers, and lifting as required by the individual's needs and applicable job requirements. Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overnight shifts when required by the residential program. Valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record preferred/required when transportation is an essential job function. Reliable attendance, punctuality, professional conduct, and ability to work independently when assigned. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a Regional Center , Community Care Facility (CCF), Supported Living Services (SLS), Independent Living Skills (ILS), Adult Residential Facility, or similar I/DD service setting . Experience implementing person-centered plans and supporting individual goals. Experience working with individuals who have complex medical, behavioral, communication, or mobility-support needs. Experience with medication assistance/self-administration support and related documentation. CPR/First Aid certification. Training or experience in positive behavioral support, crisis prevention, de-escalation, or related approaches. Experience providing community-based transportation and supporting individuals during appointments and community activities.
