THE CAREGIVER VS. THE COLLECTOR

Nobody remembers when the Collector came to town. Maybe he was always here. He works nights mostly. Quiet. Patient. Never kicks down a door. Never raises his voice. He just collects. A little balance from the woman on Birch. The strength in Mr. Talbot's legs. Mrs. Avery's driver's license. Then her car. Then the name of the street she lived on for forty-three years. He never takes everything at once. That's how he gets away with it. By the time anybody notices, he's usually three houses down. But lately, somebody's been following him. A caregiver. She moves through the city in his wake. Never catches him. Never even gets close. She just sees what he took. The Collector takes steady hands. She buttons the shirt. He takes driving. She grabs the keys. He takes the strength to stand safely in the shower. She rolls up her sleeves. He takes dinner. She puts a pan on the stove. He takes Tuesday afternoon and leaves loneliness sitting in its place. She knocks on the door. It started irritating him. So one night, he waited. She came out of a little house on Mercer just after ten. The Collector was leaning against her car. "You've been following me." She stopped. "You leave a trail." "You know you can't put any of it back." "I know." "I'll take more tomorrow." "I know." "Eventually, I take everything." The caregiver looked past him. Another porch light had come on down the block. Someone was waiting. She stepped around him. The Collector smiled. "You really think you can beat me?" She stopped at the next gate. "No." "Then why keep doing this?" She looked back at him. "Because you do." Then she walked toward the light. The Collector watched her knock. He hated that part.

Pay:

$18.00 - $21.00 per hour
