Job Description

Position Overview The Burlington Area Homeless Shelter is seeking a dependable and compassionate Support Staff member to join our team. This is an on-call, as-needed position that provides coverage when regularly scheduled staff are ill, on vacation, or otherwise unable to work their scheduled shift. The ideal candidate will be flexible, reliable, comfortable working independently, and committed to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Overnight shifts are 12:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. Availability for overnight shifts is required. Because this is a PRN position, hours will vary based on staffing needs and may include short-notice coverage. Key Responsibilities Provide a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for shelter residents. Monitor the shelter environment and ensure the safety and security of residents and the facility. Respond appropriately to resident needs and concerns in accordance with shelter policies and procedures. Contact the Executive Director or emergency personnel when necessary. Maintain professional boundaries and resident confidentiality. Complete required documentation, clerical tasks, and donation processing. Perform routine janitorial and cleaning duties, including cleaning common areas. Prepare rooms for incoming residents as needed. Maintain an organized and welcoming shelter environment. Communicate effectively with shelter leadership and staff regarding resident needs, incidents, and shift activities. Complete appropriate shift handoff information for incoming staff. Follow all shelter policies, procedures, and safety requirements. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Commitment to the mission of the Burlington Area Homeless Shelter. Minimum of one year of related work or volunteer experience preferred. Basic computer skills; Google Workspace experience preferred. Strong communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and remain professional in a residential shelter environment. Dependable and able to respond to calls for coverage when available. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, climb stairs, and perform routine cleaning and janitorial tasks. Must be at least 18 years of age.
