Job Description
Hi there. My name is Matt. I am looking for a kind, dependable, open-minded and empathetic person to work with me as a paid personal caregiver and companion in Woodmere, Long Island. This position is somewhat different from a traditional home health aide or elder-care position. I am a younger disabled adult living with physical disabilities and chronic health challenges, as well as PTSD and mental/emotional health challenges that can sometimes affect my everyday life. I am looking for someone who understands that good caregiving isn't only about completing a list of tasks. Patience, companionship, communication, consistency and simply having a supportive person around can be equally important. About Me I am a very creative person with a huge love of music, art, animation, film and graphic novels. I have a background as a musician and songwriter and currently spend a great deal of my time developing creative projects, including my own graphic novel and fictional universe. I'd especially love to find someone artistic, musical, creative or simply interested in those things. On quieter days, companionship might mean listening to music, watching movies, talking about art or life, helping me organize a creative project, playing a game, or simply hanging out and talking. I also have pets, so being comfortable around animals is important. I legally use cannabis/420 medicinally to help manage some of my physical symptoms. You do not need to use cannabis yourself, but you must be comfortable working in a 420-friendly environment. What I Need Help With Responsibilities will vary depending on how I am feeling on a particular day and may include: Companionship and emotional support Light household tasks and organization Helping maintain a comfortable and organized living environment Assistance with everyday activities when my physical limitations are worse Errands and occasional outings Accompanying me to appointments or activities when needed Helping me stay organized with appointments, schedules and personal/creative projects Light meal assistance when needed Spending time with and being comfortable around my pets Watching movies, listening to music, talking, gaming or working on creative projects together Providing calm, patient companionship during particularly difficult days I value independence and don't want someone hovering over me or treating me like a patient every minute of the day. I'm looking for someone who can recognize when I need assistance while also understanding when I simply need companionship or space. The Person I'm Hoping to Find Personality and compatibility are extremely important to me. I'm hoping to find someone who is: Genuinely kind and empathetic Patient and emotionally mature Dependable and punctual Open-minded and nonjudgmental LGBTQ+ friendly 420 friendly Comfortable around pets Comfortable working with someone who has both physical disabilities and mental-health challenges Respectful of privacy and personal boundaries Able to communicate calmly and directly Creative, artistic or interested in music/art/film is a major plus Interested in developing a consistent, long-term working relationship Previous caregiving, disability-support, companion-care, mental-health, social-work, psychology, occupational-therapy, personal-assistant or similar experience is certainly welcome. However, I am also willing to consider the right person without extensive professional caregiving experience if they are dependable, compassionate, mature and genuinely interested in this type of work. An Important Part of This Position I am specifically hoping to find one consistent person rather than constantly rotating through different caregivers. Because we would spend considerable one-on-one time together, I'd like to find someone whose personality genuinely meshes with mine. I want us to be able to laugh, have conversations, listen to music, watch something together and generally feel comfortable around one another. This is first and foremost a paid professional position, and responsibilities, hours, compensation and boundaries will always be clearly established. At the same time, I would love to develop a genuine friendship and sense of trust with the person caring for me naturally over time. I'm looking for someone who sees caregiving as working with another person rather than simply working for them. If this sounds like a position you might genuinely enjoy, please apply with a little information about yourself, your caregiving or relevant experience (if any), your interests outside of work, your availability, and what specifically interested you about this position. I'm particularly interested in hearing what you enjoy doing in your own life, music, art, movies, games, animals, creative projects, hobbies, etc. because finding the right personality match is important to me.
