Job Description

Job Title:
Women & Children's Shelter Support Staff Position Summary Women & Children's Shelter Support Staff provide direct, front-line structural support to residents in a trauma-informed, Christ-centered shelter environment. This role is responsible for maintaining safety, structure, and dignity within the shelter while fostering a calm, respectful, and supportive atmosphere for women and children experiencing homelessness. Support Staff play a critical role in daily shelter operations by monitoring community standards, responding to resident needs, documenting incidents and interactions, and collaborating closely with case managers and leadership to support resident stability and progress toward self-sufficiency. Key Responsibilities Resident Support & Engagement Provide compassionate, respectful, and trauma-informed structural support to women and children residing in the shelter. Maintain a consistent and calming presence, modeling appropriate boundaries, empathy, and professionalism. De-escalate conflict and respond appropriately to behavioral, emotional, or crisis situations in alignment with mission policies. Monitor resident well-being, safety, sobriety, hygiene, and cooperation with shelter guidelines. Ensure children's spaces remain safe, orderly, and supportive. Community Standards & Safety Enforce shelter rules and expectations fairly, consistently, and calmly. Address safety, hygiene, and behavioral concerns proactively and appropriately. Respond to emergencies and critical incidents according to established protocols and immediately notify leadership as required. Support facility cleanliness and order throughout each shift. Documentation & Communication Accurately and timely document shift activity, incidents, and resident interactions using required systems (e.g., WellSky/RMS). Communicate clearly with incoming and outgoing staff through detailed shift notes and verbal handoffs. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all written and verbal communication. Teamwork & Collaboration Work collaboratively with case managers, support staff, volunteers, and leadership to provide cohesive resident care. Participate in team meetings, trainings, and staff development opportunities as required. Support team unity by demonstrating reliability, flexibility, and a positive, solutions-oriented attitude. Assist with coverage and additional responsibilities during staffing shortages or emergencies when possible. Professional Conduct & Dependability Maintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and reliability. Follow through on assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision. Proactively communicate scheduling conflicts, concerns, or observations to leadership. Model the mission's values in interactions with residents, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Other Duties Perform additional duties as assigned to support shelter operations and mission objectives. Qualifications Demonstrates a mature Christian faith and commitment to the mission and values of Tri-City Union Gospel Mission Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, or crisis preferred Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage residents compassionately and professionally Ability to remain calm, grounded, and respectful in high-stress or emotionally charged situations Strong written and verbal communication skills Basic computer skills and willingness to learn required documentation systems Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team environment Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred Core Competencies (Performance-Based Expectations) Support Staff are expected to demonstrate ongoing growth and proficiency in the following areas: Empathy & Emotional Awareness Community Support & De-Escalation Clear and Timely Documentation Teamwork & Collaboration Dependability & Follow-Through These competencies align directly with staff performance evaluation standards and are essential to success in this role
Pay:
From $18.00 per hour Expected hours: No less than 20.0 per week
