About Armstrong Charles Armstrong School is the premier school for children with dyslexia and related learning differences in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a national reputation for excellence. We are a non-profit, independent, coeducational day school of approximately 240 students in grades 1-8, and every part of our program is designed for students who learn differently. About the Role Aftercare is where Armstrong students get to exhale after a full day of focused learning. As an Aftercare Program Associate, you'll help make that time safe, joyful, and restorative. You'll also gain hands-on experience with students with learning differences, which makes this an ideal starting point for anyone considering teaching, special education, counseling, or youth development. Flexible. Choose the days that work for you, as long as your weekly schedule is consistent. Shifts run 2:45-5:30 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 12:30-5:30 pm on Wednesdays. What You'll Do Build warm, consistent relationships with students and help them feel settled after the school day Use positive teacher language to guide behavior, set clear and kind limits, and help students resolve conflicts Support tired, frustrated, or dysregulated students with patience and calm Supervise students across indoor and outdoor spaces and transitions, following health, safety, and sign-out procedures Lead afternoon activities and snack, and keep spaces organized and supplied Maintain attendance records and document incidents per school policy, as a mandated reporter Share student updates with the Aftercare Program Lead and brief, positive updates with families at pickup What You'll Learn Responsive Classroom teacher language and limit-setting How dyslexia, ADHD, and anxiety show up in students' social and emotional lives Co-regulation strategies for supporting students through big feelings Trust-building communication with families How We Support You Monthly team meetings and paid professional development A structured feedback cycle: self-reflection, peer feedback, and a year-end evaluation Room to grow: our Aftercare Program Lead role was developed and filled from within this team Who We're Looking For Someone who genuinely enjoys kids, stays steady when things get noisy, and is reliable, because students and families count on familiar faces at the end of the day. We especially welcome candidates with personal or family experience of learning differences.
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent; availability for the full school-year schedule; Live Scan, TB clearance, and CPR/First Aid before start
Preferred:
One year of experience with elementary- or middle-school-aged children in settings such as aftercare, camps, tutoring, coaching, or classrooms Benefits Wellness stipend
