Job Description

Job Description Help for Job Description. Opens a new window. It might start with a whispered phone call. It might start with a frightened family arriving at our door in the middle of the night. However a survivor's journey begins, there is one constant that changes everything: a compassionate advocate who answers, who listens, and who refuses to let them face it alone. This role is that constant from the very first call to the first real step toward a new life. Who we are For 30 years, Serene Harbor has served survivors of domestic violence across Brevard County offering emergency shelter, a 24/7 confidential hotline, counseling, transportation, relocation assistance, support groups, legal advocacy, and outreach. Our mission is to end the cycle of domestic violence in our community through education, empowerment, intervention, prevention, social change, advocacy, and the engagement of everyone around us. This position is fully dedicated to that mission supported by grant funding so you can pour your energy into the survivors who need you. The role As a Domestic Violence Advocate, you'll provide comprehensive, trauma-informed advocacy that spans the whole journey crisis response on the helpline, hands-on advocacy in the shelter and community, prevention education, and individualized case management for survivors and their children. You'll answer hotline calls with empathy and a steady voice, assessing each caller's immediate needs, level of lethality, and safety planning before connecting them to shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, healthcare, and community resources. You'll report to the Shelter Director and grow through ongoing training. We invest in our advocates. You'll complete 30 hours of DCF Domestic Violence competency-based training (including 6 hours of on-the-job training in your first 30 days), the Florida hotline curriculum with role-play evaluation, and complete 16 hours of continuing domestic violence training each year. Who we're hoping to meet You lead with compassion and stay grounded when emotions run high. You bring a high school diploma or equivalent and, ideally, experience with domestic violence survivors or other vulnerable populations. You're organized, meet deadlines, and are comfortable with Microsoft Office and Google Suite. You communicate in a supportive, compassionate, non-judgmental way, and you can problem-solve and de-escalate even in the hardest moments. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are a real plus. You'll need to pass a Level 2 federal background check with fingerprints and be willing to work a flexible schedule because, above all, this work calls for a genuine passion for helping survivors. Ready to answer the call? If this sounds like the purpose you've been looking for, we'd love to hear from you. Come help us build a safer, more hopeful Brevard County, one survivor at a time.
