POSITION SUMMARY
The Student Assistance Professional (SAP) provides integrated, school-based behavioral health and student support services within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework. This position works collaboratively with students, families, school staff, and community providers to deliver coordinated prevention, intervention, and support services that promote student well-being, engagement, and success. Using a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach, the SAP supports students experiencing mental health, substance use, behavioral, and environmental challenges by connecting them with resources, building coping and resiliency skills, and helping reduce barriers to learning. The SAP serves as an embedded member of the school community and contributes to the development of supportive, inclusive, and responsive school environments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Identify, engage, and support students through screening, intake, case management, and individualized support planning aligned with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Provide short-term intervention, skill-building, coaching, and progress monitoring to support student behavioral health, engagement, and success. Facilitate prevention, intervention, and support groups focused on areas such as substance use prevention, social-emotional skills, conflict resolution, coping strategies, and academic readiness. Partner with families to address barriers to student success by providing outreach, education, support strategies, and connections to community resources. Coordinate referrals and access to community-based services, including behavioral health, healthcare, housing, substance use treatment, and other support systems. Collaborate with school staff, multidisciplinary teams, and external partners to ensure coordinated, student-centered service delivery and effective communication. Support school-wide prevention, wellness, and positive climate initiatives that promote safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation, records, and data systems in accordance with program, legal, and regulatory requirements. Collect, monitor, and report program data to support accountability, evaluation, and continuous improvement efforts.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Adolescent development, behavioral health, substance use prevention, and student support practices. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), trauma-informed practices, and strengths-based approaches. Community resources and referral systems that support students and families. Confidentiality standards, including FERPA, HIPAA, and related professional and ethical practices.
Skill in:
Building positive relationships and communicating effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners. Facilitating groups, providing case management, and supporting student engagement and skill development. Organization, documentation, and maintaining accurate records and data systems. Using technology and electronic systems for communication, documentation, and reporting. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability To:
Work independently and collaboratively within school and multidisciplinary team environments. Manage multiple priorities while maintaining organization, professionalism, and confidentiality. Respond effectively in dynamic, emotionally charged, or crisis situations using sound judgment and de-escalation strategies. Support students and families using culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices. Adapt to changing student, school, and program needs in a fast-paced environment.
REQUIRED QUALIFCATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Human Services, Education, Public Health, or a closely related field.
Experience:
Experience working with youth in educational, behavioral health, prevention, or community-based settings. Experience supporting students experiencing behavioral health, substance use, social-emotional, or environmental challenges. Experience collaborating with families, school staff, and community partners to coordinate student supports and services. Experience facilitating groups, providing case management, or implementing prevention and intervention supports for youth.
Certifications/ Licenses:
Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) credential, or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of employment; a current Washington State Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP) credential may substitute for the CPP requirement.
Background Requirements:
Successful completion of a Washington State Patrol WATCH check is required. A fingerprint-based background check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI in accordance with OSPI and district policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in school-based behavioral health, student assistance, prevention, or community youth service programs. Experience supporting youth impacted by substance use, mental health, trauma, or adverse childhood experiences. Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, behavioral health providers, or community agencies. Experience using trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strengths-based practices when working with youth and families. Washington State Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP) credential preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in school settings as part of an integrated student support team, with additional work occurring in offices, community locations, and virtual environments. The position requires regular interaction with students, families, school staff, behavioral health providers, and community partners throughout the ESD 105 region. The role involves supporting students experiencing behavioral, emotional, substance use, or environmental challenges in dynamic school environments. Occasional evening hours, meetings, trainings, or community events may be required to support student and family needs. Physical Demands The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following conditions: Significant (66%+ of the time): Sitting for extended periods while completing documentation, case management activities, and computer-based work. Speaking, listening, and engaging with students, families, staff, and community partners in individual and group settings. Using hands and fingers for typing, operating office technology, and maintaining electronic records. Frequent (33-66% of the time): Standing and walking throughout school campuses, classrooms, and community settings to provide services and support. Facilitating groups, meetings, and student support activities. Driving to schools, meetings, and community locations throughout the region. Occasional (up to 33% of the time): Bending, reaching, and carrying materials related to meetings, groups, or student support activities. Lifting and transporting materials or equipment (typically up to 20 lbs). Responding to emotionally charged or crisis situations using safe, trauma-informed, and de-escalation practices.
