Youth Peer Support Specialist is a mentor or recovery coach position to help youth who are currently experiencing mental health concerns. The ideal candidate will be a young adult who has experienced a mental health disorder when they were a child or adolescent, and is willing to share their own personal experiences to assist youth in the recovery process. Certification is available on-the-job. $16.64/hour minimum One position to cover Marshall and Jackson Counties in Alabama Qualifications to Become a Certified Peer Specialist -

Youth:

Must be at least 18 years old, Must have personal experience with children's mental health ( systems), Must have an understanding of recovery, Must be willing to assist other individuals in their recovery process, Must be open minded, Must be willing to share personal experiences with mental illness publicly, Must be a High School Graduate or have GED, and Must have successfully completed Certified Peer Specialist - Youth training and exam. Full time position for both Marshall County, AL and Jackson County, AL Candidate must be under the age of 35.

Summary of Responsibilities:

A Youth Peer Support Specialist is a youth who has lived experience with a mental health disorder when they were a child or adolescent, who is willing to share his/her personal experiences to assist youth in their recovery process.

Examples of Job Requirements:

Provides structured, scheduled activities that promote socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, development of natural supports, and maintenance of community living skills. Actively engage and empower an individual and his/her identified supports in leading and directing the design of the service plan. Provide support and coaching interventions to the youth and family to promote recovery, resiliency and healthy lifestyles and to reduce identifiable behavioral health and physical health risks and increase healthy behaviors intended to prevent the onset of disease or lessen the impact of existing chronic health conditions. Maintain appropriate written clinical documentation to support each service, activity and session provided within the scope of the program.

Supervisor:

This position is typically supervised by a Program Coordinator/Program Director.

Required Qualifications:

Must meet criteria for Youth Peer Support Specialist as defined by Medicaid. The Youth Peer Support Specialist must meet the following minimum expectations: Under age 35. Must have capacity to work flexible hours including evening/weekend availability based on the needs of the client. Must have a high school diploma or GED. Must be able drive to clients' homes, community events, and/or schools as needed at times which may involve climbing stairs. Must have a valid Alabama driver's license. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have basic typing/computer processing skills. Must be able to complete and pass the Mental Health Youth Peer Support Provider Training approved and sponsored by Alabama Department of Mental Health.
