Position Summary Oceanside First Presbyterian Church and Preschool is seeking a Director of Student Ministries to lead and grow our ministries with students in grades 5 through 12 and to walk alongside their families as they navigate faith, life, and the teenage years together. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys young people and values the important role parents and families play in their spiritual development. This person should be able to laugh with students, listen well, build trust, have meaningful conversations, and help students discover what it looks like to follow Jesus in their everyday lives. At the same time, the Director of Student Ministries will serve as a partner and resource to parents and caregivers, building relationships with families, communicating well, encouraging them, and helping connect what students experience at church with faith at home. The right person will be relational, energetic, dependable, creative, and comfortable taking initiative. They do not need to have all the answers or fit a particular personality type, but they should be someone students want to be around, families trust, and volunteers are excited to serve alongside. Our goal is to create student ministries where young people: Know that they are loved by God, their families, and their church. Grow in a real and lasting relationship with Jesus Christ. Build meaningful friendships with one another. Have a safe place to ask questions and talk honestly about life and faith. Are supported by caring adults who know them and encourage them. Discover opportunities to serve, lead, worship, and participate in the broader life of the church. Experience a strong connection between their faith, their families, and their everyday lives. Have a lot of fun along the way. The Director of Student Ministries will lead our Sunday morning student ministries as well as a weekly gathering outside of Sunday mornings. We already have committed volunteers who love our students and are ready to serve alongside the Director. We are looking for someone who can provide leadership, consistency, vision, creativity, and relational investment as these ministries continue to grow. Responsibilities Plan and lead a weekly student gathering for students in grades 5 through 12. Lead and coordinate student ministries during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday worship service. Prepare engaging, Bible-based teaching that helps students understand Scripture and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Build meaningful, appropriate, and consistent relationships with students. Develop relationships with parents and caregivers and serve as a supportive ministry partner to families. Communicate regularly with families about programs, events, opportunities, and the spiritual direction of the student ministries. Look for ways to encourage and equip parents as they help their children grow in faith. Create opportunities for students and families to connect with one another and with the broader church community. Create a ministry environment where new students and families are welcomed and every young person has the opportunity to feel known and included. Develop opportunities for prayer, worship, fellowship, service, fun, and spiritual growth. Work alongside, encourage, and equip our existing team of student ministry volunteers. Recruit and develop additional volunteers as the ministries grow. Plan occasional special events, service projects, retreats, outings, and fellowship opportunities. Look for creative ways to connect with students and families beyond regularly scheduled programs. Encourage students to participate in worship, service, leadership, and the broader ministry life of the church. Collaborate with the Pastor, church staff, parents, caregivers, and volunteers. Help shape the future direction and growth of student ministries at Oceanside First Presbyterian Church and Preschool. Follow all church child protection and safety policies. Who We Are Looking For Our ideal Director of Student Ministries is someone who: Has a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ and wants to help young people know and follow Him. Genuinely likes middle school and high school students and enjoys spending time with them. Values parents and families as essential partners in the spiritual lives of students. Is warm, approachable, encouraging, and able to connect with a variety of personalities and family backgrounds. Can have fun with students while also providing mature and consistent leadership. Is comfortable talking about faith in a way that is biblical, authentic, understandable, and relevant to students. Is a good listener and someone students and families can trust. Can provide encouragement and support to parents without assuming the role of the parent. Brings creativity and energy to ministry rather than simply maintaining a calendar of programs. Takes initiative and can work independently without needing constant direction. Is dependable, organized, communicative, and follows through on commitments. Enjoys working as part of a team and values the contributions of volunteers, families, and other church leaders. Wants to help build student ministries where young people feel comfortable inviting friends and families feel connected to the church. Previous experience working with students or families through a church, school, camp, coaching, mentoring, youth organization, or similar environment is preferred. Formal ministry or theological education is welcomed, but it is not required . We care greatly about character, relational ability, spiritual maturity, leadership potential, and a genuine calling to walk alongside students and families. The Director of Student Ministries must successfully complete all required background checks and child protection training. Schedule and Flexibility This position averages 15-20 hours per week . Sunday mornings are a regular part of the position , including student ministries during our 10:00 a.m. worship service. The Director will also lead one consistent weekly student gathering outside of Sunday mornings. Beyond these regular ministry commitments, the position offers significant scheduling flexibility. Preparation, communication, family connection, planning, volunteer coordination, meetings, and other administrative responsibilities may generally be completed on a flexible schedule in coordination with the Pastor and church staff. We recognize that meaningful student ministries and family relationships do not always fit within traditional office hours. The goal is not to require the Director to maintain a set weekday office schedule, but to provide the flexibility needed to prepare well, build relationships, support families, lead effectively, and be present for students while remaining within the expectations of a 15-20 hour-per-week position. Occasional special events, retreats, service opportunities, family gatherings, or student activities may take place outside the normal weekly schedule.
