Kitchen Manager - The Street Chaplaincy This is a 5 hour per week position, working at the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, 1510 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, CA. It reports to the Executive Director.
Position Overview:
The Kitchen Manager plays a critical role in the TSC mission by overseeing the kitchen activities for the Tuesday Night Wellness Gathering, which provides nutritious meals for those in need. This role combines leadership, food preparation, and organizational skills to ensure that all kitchen activities run smoothly, efficiently, and safely. The Kitchen Manager will be responsible for supporting volunteers in prepping and serving meals while maintaining a welcoming, respectful environment for volunteers and guests. Occasionally, this person will have responsibility for preparing the meal.
Key Responsibilities:
1.
Kitchen Operations Management:
- Oversee the Tuesday operations of the kitchen, including food preparation, meal service, and sanitation.
- Supervise kitchen volunteers, ensuring that food is prepared and served in a timely manner and in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
- Maintain inventory of kitchen supplies and food and track usage to prevent waste.
- Order supplies as needed.

Food Safety & Sanitation:
- Ensure compliance with all local food safety regulations, including proper food handling, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen and food storage areas.
- Monitor temperature control for food to ensure safety and quality.

Volunteer Management & Training:
- Maintain the electronic calendar of volunteer groups, send out periodic appeals and reminders of upcoming assignments. Work actively with the Executive Director and Administrative Assistant to ensure adequate staffing of meals.
- Cultivate an environment of hospitality, teamwork, and respect, ensuring that all volunteers feel valued.
- Supervise volunteers, ensuring that food safety and cleaning protocols are followed.

Client Interaction:
- Ensure that meals are served in a manner that reflects respect for those we serve.
- Foster a welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere in the kitchen and dining area.

Budget & Resource Management:
- Work with the Executive Director to manage the kitchen budget, keeping costs within limits while maintaining meal quality.
- Track inventory and manage donations of food or kitchen supplies.

Collaboration & Communication:
- Communicate effectively with all staff, volunteers, and guests
- Report on kitchen activities and needs to the Executive Director.

Special Events & Outreach:
- Work with the Executive Director to organize occasional special events such as the Turkey Tuesday dinner in November.
Qualifications:
- Experience in kitchen management or food service, preferably in a community-based environment.
- Experience in managing staff or volunteers in a kitchen setting.
- Familiarity with the unique needs of vulnerable populations.
- Ability to complete the online food management certification
Skills :
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and health codes.
- Ability to manage supply inventory.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer literacy including communicating by email/Zoom and ability to use the volunteer signup program (SignUp Genius).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move heavy items (up to 50 lbs).
- Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a busy kitchen.

Salary:
$25/hour. Typical Schedule (some flexibility)
