Job Description

LEAD PASTOR
Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church Johnstown, Pennsylvania Full-Time Salary + Parsonage + Health Coverage
ABOUT SINGER HILL GRACE BRETHREN CHURCH
Singer Hill Grace Brethren Church is a multigenerational congregation of about 65 people nestled in the Johnstown, Pennsylvania area. Founded around 1945, Singer Hill has been a faithful presence on the hill for generations. The people here are warm, unpretentious, and genuinely family-oriented. Hunters, retirees, young families, and people from all walks of life find a real welcome at Singer Hill. The church gathers for Sunday morning worship, an adult Bible study in the hour before the service, and a Wednesday night program built around a shared meal, with something for every age from kids to adults. Singer Hill is a congregation that knows who it is, is honest about where it has been, and is ready to grow into what God has next. Singer Hill has entered a partnership with Assist Church Expansion through the Charis Fellowship. This partnership will provide the incoming pastor with ongoing coaching and support as he walks with the congregation through a new and fruitful chapter of ministry. Singer Hill exists to be a people of hope, following Jesus for the good of their neighbors. That purpose is not a slogan. It shapes how the church worships, how it cares for one another, and how it engages the community around it.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Johnstown is a working-class community with deep roots, real needs, and a population that is largely disconnected from a local church. That represents a genuine and significant ministry opportunity for a pastor who is willing to be present, build relationships, and invest for the long term. Singer Hill is not looking to reinvent itself. It is looking for a pastor who will help it become more fully what it already believes it is called to be: a grace-filled family that is biblically grounded, relationally real, joyfully sent, and always growing together in Christ. The congregation has done honest, prayerful work to clarify its purpose and values. The next step is a pastor who can lead them to live those values out. The people Singer Hill is called to reach are largely rooted in Johnstown. They are working-class and working-hard, shaped by family ties, local community, and a region that has asked a lot of its residents over the years. Many of them have some background with faith, perhaps a season in church as a child, a grandparent who took them, or a time when God felt more present than he does now. Life moved on, church faded, and no one has made a compelling case for coming back. They are not hostile to the gospel. They are waiting for a church that feels honest, warm, and genuinely for people like them. Reaching them is not a program. It is a pastoral calling.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Shepherd the Congregation Preach and teach regularly, provide pastoral care, and lead the congregation with clarity and warmth through this next season of ministry. The church values preaching that is grounded in Scripture and applied in ways that move people toward Christ and toward one another. Engage the Community Be genuinely present in Johnstown beyond the walls of the church. This means building real relationships with neighbors and people who are far from God, not as a program, but as a natural expression of who the pastor is. As those relationships grow, the pastor will help cast a vision for the whole congregation to engage their community with the same intentionality. Lead with Vision Work collaboratively with the church leadership to move Singer Hill forward. Help the congregation take its next steps in mission, discipleship, and community engagement, and do so with patience, humility, and a long-term perspective.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a pastor with the following character and competencies: A genuine love for unchurched and de-churched people, not as a category, but as neighbors. This pastor should be naturally warm and curious toward people who have little or no church background. Community-minded and comfortable with the full range of people that make up Johnstown, including lower-income families and people navigating mental health challenges. Singer Hill is a church where everyone is welcome, and the pastor needs to mean that. Humble and relationally present. Much of the work of leading this church forward will happen outside of formal ministry settings, in conversations, in the neighborhood, and in the ordinary rhythms of life. The pastor should genuinely enjoy people and make time for them. Biblically grounded and a faithful preacher. Scripture should be central, handled with integrity, and applied in ways that move people toward Christ and toward others. A passion for discipleship. Not satisfied with people simply knowing God's Word, but committed to helping the congregation actually live it out, building a culture of intentional growth and next steps in faith. Emotionally steady and patient. Ministry takes time, relationships require ongoing care, and seasons of difficulty are inevitable. We are looking for a pastor who stays grounded, pastoral, and consistent when things get hard. Able to balance preaching preparation, congregational care, and active presence in the broader community. A pastor who strongly prefers long hours of study and limited outside engagement will likely not be the right fit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Meets the biblical qualifications for eldership as outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Meaningful pastoral ministry experience with genuine shepherding responsibility. Bible college or seminary training preferred. Demonstrated ministry experience and competence may substitute for formal education. Comfortable with and supportive of Singer Hill's affiliation with the Charis Fellowship, including participation in district meetings, Focus retreats, and the national conference. Willingness to relocate to the Johnstown, Pennsylvania area.
COMPENSATION AND CHURCH STRUCTURE
Singer Hill offers a competitive full-time compensation package including salary, a well-maintained parsonage, and health care coverage. Specific figures will be shared with candidates who advance in the process. Singer Hill is a congregationally governed church. The incoming pastor will work alongside a supportive and collaborative lay leadership team that is genuinely invested in the church's future. A Note to Prospective Candidates Singer Hill is a small church with a big heart and a clear sense of where it wants to go. The people here are real, the community is genuinely in need of the gospel, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference is significant. We are not looking for someone to come in and turn things around overnight. We are looking for a pastor who will love this congregation, show up in this community, and walk faithfully with us into the future God has for Singer Hill. If that kind of work appeals to you, we would welcome the conversation.
